Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook
Hi, I bought my Acer aspire 5101 laptop just over a year ago and all of a sudden it decided to brake. I was using it one night and it was working fine but the next morning when I booted it up it got all the way to the logon screen but then I cannot do anything. I think that this has something to do with the keyboard and mouse as they will not respond and when I plug in external ones nothing happens either. I had taken it to a shop and he says that it is the motherboard that is the problem. I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas or if anyone knew of any solutions to the problem as I have no other solutions except for buying a new laptop as could end up same price as replacing motherboard. Any help appreciated.
I had the same problem with my Acer Aspire 5100. I tried external keyboard, nothing happened. I was left with no other option but to re-install Windows(XP Pro) which helped beyond reason!!!

Exactly the same deal with my 5100-3123. This is the second motherboard in this machine (the first died at 3 months, this one at 10 months). I figure the chipset (southbridge) has gone south since this is what controls all the I/O functions. Pull the hard drive and install in another machine to copy, or better yet image it before sending it off. Acer will charge about $600.+ to replace the board. My Dell, and company Thinkpad, have been way more reliable.

If it won't go past the login screen, you should try restoring it from CD first, and then replacing the hard drive if that doesn't work. I don't have all the details, but from what you describe I don't agree with the motherboard diagnosis.
