- Dear Ron, Many thanks for your time and solutions. I have looked up into the memory and the memory slot is empty. I have tried removing hdd and putting it back too. I also tried with another memory stick. But at the end of the day the final problem is it switches on show the logo or sometime even go to windows logo and then screen goes off. It seems that fan is running but nothing comes up on the screen completely blank. If switches on again quickly nothing happens on screen. One will have to wait few minutes and then switch on and then same problem display and screen goes off.
I very much appreciate your help. Many thanks.

-   I am having the same problem with my T40. I tried hooking it up to an external display, and that functions in the same way. I boot up, both the laptop LCD and the external display work just fine, and as Windows is either starting up, or just after it finishes, both displays go blank.
survival, Here's a couple of things to try: Power down and remove the battery. Leave it out until you are done with the following procedures. Remove the memory modules and put only one back in. Try to power up. If that works, replace the other one and power up. If that works, you're fixed! If not, try to power up in safe mode and see what happens. If it comes up, try running diagnostics on the HDD. If that fails, try reseating the hard drive.
Let me know how you're coming along on this. May be able to come up with more ideas, if needed.

Ron-
Well, being a techy I figured out this problem but not a fix. I have 3 T40 laptops with the same issue. One of them if you don't touch it it works fine. I probed around thinking the same are you , memory swaps and such but the problem seems to lie either on the motherboard or the CPU socket. When pressing my finger directly on the CPU it immidiatly freezes after making video glitches and garbage. It seems that the sockets become either faulty over time or the mother board has bad connections. I've tried swapping CPU's so that's not the issue. depending how much your CPU fan screws are tight will probably affect it's functionality. I just wish there was a real fix for it but it seems either mechanical or cold solder joints.

- Bad CPU socket or solder joint. Trust me. I have two with those problems. Finger on CPU and caused it right away.

I am looking for a quad-core min 4. GB of DDR3 RAM.
I also want a better GPU then just the intregrated one so that I can truely play games hi-res, just search me the best laptop you can find, but not from dell, that includes Alienware.
Thanks in advance
