One hates to be the bearer of bad news but, these little things are pathetic! No one that I know has been able to get one to work successfully.
Your best bet is probably to send the thing back and let your granddaughter work on YOUR nice machine!
Mine is learning that way and it is probably safer than trying to learn with a hand needle.
I bought a style elements mini sewing machine for my 9 year old granddaughter so she could learn how to sew. The sewing machine has gone crazy! When you turn the machine on, the needle starts going up and down pretty fast by itself as if it were sewing. There is no way you can even put material down to sew as the needle is moving up and down. We checked the foot pedal to make sure it wasn't stuck and the machine still goes by its self. Needless to say my granddaughter was very upset because she wants to learn to sew. What could possibly be causing the machine to do this?
It was hardly used for a reason. Everybody here got their's at a yard sale, thrift store, etc. Hmm, wonder why? Please don't give it to your granddaughter to learn on. She will only learn to hate sewing. Get her a forty pound, fifteen-year-old kenmore that will be a lot of tolerant. The Tiny Tailor is a little piece of large frustration.
Singer Red Band, regular point style 2020, size 14 needle. Insert flat side facing right.
