Question about Sony KP-51HW40 51" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Frequency lock One of my two NTSC receivers cannot keep locked on frequency (the one on the right). It drifts out to BW and mostly snow, then snaps back in. This cycle takes about 2 to 3 seconds, but is continuous. The problem is intermittent, but the trouble is there much more often than not. There are no mild occurrences of the problem, it's either happening, or not.

Re: Frequency lock

You got cold contacts on the tuner. Redo all coils and IC's solderings in the tuner or replace it if is to complicate.

Picture goes in and out

This will require you opening the back cover of the television to test some component with the use of an ohmmeter.
This may be a slight drift - like someone is messing with the fine tuning
or such a substantial change in tuning frequency that the channels go by
as though you are surfing.

Possible causes depend on tuner type:

1. Quartz tuner (10 button direct access digital synthesizer) - For a
slight drift, a component is probably changing value, possibly the
crystal in the reference oscillator. For gross changes - flipping
through channels - it is more likely to be a digital control problem -
the microcontroller is misdirecting the synthesizer to change frequency.

2. Varactor tuner (buttons but not direct channel access) - If only a
single pushbutton selection is the problem, the the varactor tuning diode
for that button is probably changing capacitance. If all channels in
a band (Vl, Vh, U) are having a problem, it is more likely to be a
drifting D/A or faulty AFT (Automatic Fine Tuning) circuit or power supply.

3. Turret or switch tuner (Knobs) - A component like a capacitor is changing

You will have to get in there with a heat gun or cold spray and track it down
the old fashioned way. At least, the problem is almost certainly localized
to the tuner box (and possibly the controller if applicable).

As noted, gradual slight changes in tuning are likely due to frequency
determining components drifting.

Uncontrolled channel surfing is probably a logic problem. For the
quartz tuner, this could still be marginal connections causing the
microprocessor to misdirect the synthesizer to change channels.

For the latter case, particularly, the cause may still be bad connections
resulting in loss of channel memory and/or erratic behavior.
Take care...

I have a Samsung HLN617W and am relocating to Germany. I'm thinking that the TV will not work properly since the Germans use the frequency of operation of 50hz and the TV is set to the American Frequency...

No,the main problems USA,European, and Asia are the NTSC or PAL tv signals frequencies.Sometimes the 110 volts or 210 volts, need a tranformer for that to step up or down the voltages for that. The Hez,the tranformers inside the power board convert for that. The colors wheel is dead,it dead! Will not make no diffrent in spinning RPM revolutions of the colors weel.

My PVR has retuned (DSO)to the wrong transmitter. I receive signals from the Winter Hill transmitter and live in SW Cumbria. My Humax 9200T has retuned ok but my older 8000T has retuned to a transmitter in...

Not a complete solution but after much fruitless fiddling through the menu I eventually found that the programmes were actually there but under different channel numbers.
I searched a long way down the LIST of channels (on remote) The BBC1 channel I want is now 800 BBC. Selecting 1 on the remote still brings up BBC Wales.
This applies to my Humax 8000T PVR - I can't comment on other makes of Freeview box.

FL231 replacement did not work

convergence is not the problem my dear. what u saw is due to improper signal. you said u replaced the convergence board, but the problem is still there. the frequency is not proper. what happen sometime the component used in the board shift there value. u chage the board that's ok, but you didn't check the frequency applied to that board. in some cases the frequency is applied through the electrolytic filters. after sometime they shift there value and make variable changes in the frequency. in some cases it is applied to complementry transistors. pair of two transistors NPN & PNP. what we do, we first check the electolytic filters, in most cases they are defective. second option is the polyster capacitors, who hold the frequencies and play the important role in any electronic device. if there is any tantulum capacitor is used, it's rare chance of them to be defective, there only alternate is- replace them. if you have any other source like:. external frequency generator board (which produce both horizontal & vertical frequency with clock pulse). it would be helpful.
tell me if you check all this then i will give you more solutions......
but i don't think u need more

Problems with intermittent green snow

Looks like green horizontal lines, this is definately some type of filter problem. Looks like in the HV or Horizontal are. It first looks like turner problems but you say it's on all inputs. Then if that's correct it's not the tuner.

dont know about warranties but horizontal lines means your horizontal frequency which runs about everything has drifted off sync and if too high or low it will activate shut down circuits in high voltage and power suppy, even causing HOT transistor to short. good luck and call a tech.

Mitusbishi big screen vs-60707, circa 2001

I have never worked on a Mitsubishi with this problem but I have seen it in other sets. Most notably Zenith sets from about the same time. The Zenith sets have an electrolytic capacitor which fails (changes value) and causes the power supply to switch at a lower frequency. If the frequency is low enough the set will never turn on but if it is not less than half the operating frequency the set may turn on sometimes and run forever or not. It sounds like your Mitsu has a similar problem. This would not be an expensive fix but probably is beyond your expertise.
