VACUUM WON'T SHUT OFF

MY VACUUM WON'T SHUT OFF EVEN AFTER SLIDING THE "ON/OFF" SWITCH INTO THE "OFF" POSITION. I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE ELECTRONIC SWITCH (SEARS #8191600) TO NO AVAIL. PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. SHOULD I REPLACE THE WIRE HARNESS (SEARS # KC37GBZTZV06)???

I have the same problem. The plastic mechanism inside the handle is not engaging the on-off switch. Perhaps there is a secret to attaching the handle to the main body of the vacuum that will allow the plastic actuator to slip over the switch. I am using a power strip in between the vacuum and the wall outlet to turn the vacuum on and off. I prefer the switch on the power strip to plugging in the vacuum live into the wall outlet. I draws a lot of current and there is a major spark when you plug the vacuum in while it is in the on position.

After only a few uses I am experiencing exactly the same problem. The slide switch will not shut the unit off. I have just unplugged to stop. My next step is to look for a different brand to replace. I'm hoping to find my receipt and return to Kohls as soon as possible.

I'm having the same problem as well. I have disconnected the hose from the cannister and the vacuum still runs; this isolates the switch in the handle by completely disconnecting. Unable to find a wiring diagram. It appears to me there is either a mechanical or electronic relay (switch) internal in the cannister that has "stuck" in the on position.

Same problem...I just replaced the switch but problem persists. How do I find the relay and try to fix that?

We have the same problem. Have to unplug to turn off. Also feels like it's getting hotter than it should.

    Boo!!

  • Anonymous Mar 10, 2008

Did anyone actually figure this out? or is this just a place where we complain?

I've just have had the same problem. Vacuum doesn't shut off.. Is there any reset button?

My grandmother's Kenmore canister vacuum (model # 116.26312 or it could be 116.23313) will not turn off when I move the switch in the off mode. The head will stop spinning but you can still hear/feel the suction.

  • macmaven Aug 24, 2008

Same thing.  I hit a shag carpet that got tied up in the brush.  I tried to shut off the vacuum with the switch... no go.  I unplugged the vacuum and then cleared the brush.  Plugged it back in and the switch no longer turns off the vacuum.

FYI - The switch will disengage the brush... but the vacuum's motor continues to run.  It does get very hot.  Seems to work fine though... pain in the *** to unplug.

I have the exact same problem!!!

    Kenmore 116.22262C

Has anyone come up with a solution?

  • Anonymous Mar 05, 2009

I have the problem on a Hoover.
I guess the plasric part that slides and flips the switch off and on got worn. I can't believe they designrd it like that. It's like turning a switch off and on with a stick!!!

I also have the problem with my Sears vacuum cleaner (Model # 166.25512506) not turning off. Is the relay you spoke of something that can be purchased and installed separately or must one replace the whole motor? How can I find and identify the relay? (I have a parts list and schematic for my machine but no relay part is listed.)

Need a model number to be sure, but alot of the Sears cannisters have a relay and it is found mounted in the motor comparment, it may be sticking in the on position.

The "vacuum won't shut off" problem is caused by a faulty triac (electronic component) on the P.C.B. assembly. You have two choices, depending on your handiness:

  1. Easiest: Replace the PCB: P.N.=KC86WBZRZ000
  2. More difficult: Replace the triac: BTA16-600CW (ST Microelectronics): http://www.st.com/internet/com/TECHNICAL_RESOURCES/TECHNICAL_LITERATURE/DATASHEET/CD00002265.pdf
The PCB costs about $25.00 from Sears, whereas the triac costs about $1.50. Sears will not sell the triac - you'll have to find an electronics parts supplier.

Vacuum works but won't shut off

Switch is broken in the "ON" position. Just plug it into a power strip outlet and use the switch on the power strip outlet to turn it on and off.

Good day!

Normally when the motor is easily moved back and forth means that it have a proper lubrication, proper alignment and no clogs.

When the motor and the belt is OK the problem could be on electrical wiring and switch.

If found electrical switch burned out you need to replaced it because when the switch is burn the contact of that switch is open even you turn it ON.that's why the motor is not function because the voltage is not pass through the circuit because of open switch. You need to replaced it.
And check some fuses if any and other burned electrical wire.Replaced it also.

Thank you and don't forget to rate my answer.

Vacuum will not shut off

Either the switch has a contact inside, or the wiring in the harness to motor are making contact.
This can be verified using a multimeter , preferably reading continuity (Ohms) on switch contacts, with power disconnected, that is safer than reading voltages.
This will tell if responsible is the switch or the wiring harness.

Vacuum will not shut off

Sounds like you have wires crossed at the switch. The 2 wires coming in go to the center posts, 2 to the power head & 2 to the main motor.

This sounds like you have an internal problem with the electrical switch. I would recommend you take it to a vacuum dealer who has experience with this model. This is a relatively simple reapir for a pro shop to handle.

Vacuum power won't shut off

You didn't give brand and model number, some vacuums have a relay in them and they stick and stay on. If you have one, it will have to be replaced.
