Question about Acer Aspire 1642WLMi Notebook
I have an acer aspire 1641 NWLMI laptop. All of a sudden it stopped loading windows xp. It comes to the desktop screen and then the mouse and the key board in the laptop does not respond or only the mouse responds with a great delay. But if i use a usb keyboard and mouse it works fine. The cpu keeps on running at 100% even when i am not running any programs. I check the task manager and it says that a process called 'system' is running constantly consuming 40-50% of processor usage. I was not able to shut down as the shut down window never appears after i press it. I was initially able to run the programs using the usb key board and mouse but after a few boot ups it stopped loading desktop.
I thought it is a virus and reinstalled windows xp. formatted the hard drive. While reinstalling i got stuck (laptop was not responding for a long time) while it was setting up network devices ( if i am not worong; i am sure it is something to do with the network). I powered it down using the button and restarted and this time it finished installation. But when i restarted the same problem came.
Next i installed ubuntu linux and this also did not install completely and i had to stop. Same problem comes (desktop appears and everything hangs);.
I rememebered that before shutting down the windows asked me that one process related to battery power was not responding and i used to give end now option. So i thought it is something to do with the battery so i removed it from the laptop and connectd to main and restarted . This time it is working fine !
What could be the problem ? I dont think the battery is alltogether gone because i am able to start and run the computer for sometime with the battery. Besides i dont understand why it does not load completely when battery is in the laptop with the main supply connected.
Can anyone help, please? -----
Had the same exact problem, however, was only able to disable the ACPI in device manager while running without the battery plugged in. The system works well now. Thanks for the tip.

Try disabling ACPI (Advanced Configuration Power Interface) in BIOS screen, if you have that option. Something does not agree with Windows control of all ACPI devices...could be the modem or ethernet network. Also, if no success, try disabling "allow this device to wake computer" for either (or both) the modem or ethernet network devices in control panel-system devices option screen.
