Heater runs but then dies out and smokes replaced fuel hoses is it the spark plug maybe

The spark ignition electrode is done doing its job as soon as flame is established. I'm thinking your infra-red eye is possibly the culprit. It 'sees' the infra-red given off by the flame to hold the fuel valve open. It is a glass eye that may not be perfectly aligned to 'see' the flame or it could have a dirty lens. Clean it first and try again. Try to make sure it is properly aligned to see the flame when it is established.

You should take the heater apart and blow it out. Wore brush the burner. and blow out the pilot assembly. Vacuum the bricks. Put it all back together. It just needs a little tlc.

My flame is above the guard on the heater in the middle flame. How do I adjust the flame to be lower?

this is happening because the bricks need cleaning. I imagine the flame is burning blue instead of glowing red in the middle brick. Contact your local propane or natural gas dealer about getting the heater cleaned. This type of problem causes a huge loss of efficiency and could be dangerous.

Make sure the grate is in the holder like the others, and nothing is blocking the bottom of it. They often slip back where the fire misses the inside where it should hit.

Usually the pilot goes out because of a faulty flame sensor or wire connection.
