Re: sdlt 110/220 flshing all 3 lights

Ok I had this problem exactly. The way it broke as I found out was the tape drive... when you first insert a tape.
a: hooks a little pin to the tape and pulls it around a spinning reel inside the drive.
b: the tape had a slight.......slight bend in the pin on the beginning of the tape.
c: the pin in the drive barely caught the tape. As it is supposed to catch with both ends of the pins, but only one end caught.
d: this then pulled the tape out into the machine a inch or so and came undone.
e: then the reel inside the tape drive pulled the lead inside, rendering the drive useless!

I pondered it for a bit and decided to pull some tape out of the drive and hook it to the loose lead that had been pulled into the drum. It worked like a charm! Hooked up the power to the unit and it pulled in the tape around the inside drum.
I then ejected the tape nicely and won't use that particular tape anymore!

Make sure all the power is unhooked when working on this and make sure that the tape is fed by the heads properly before power is applied.
I was so thrilled that I fixed it, failed to take a picture...sorry.

It appears that you may have some board issues. Are these drives going into library's or being used as stand alone units? I need more info to better diagnose the issue.

Hardware failure. either drive leader is off or other mech fault ie. brake release is broken or head shield is not in place, causes a load jam.

How to remove stuck tape

To type over the 3 pages from the manual and put the two images here, would be to much. Every DLT and Ultra SDLT manual has a chapter about how to remove the tape, when it got stuck. Please use your own manual for this.

Using SDLT cleaning Tape

When the drives Clean LED comes on, install a "Universal" LTO Cleaning tape, as these drives do not need routine cleaning. Only ever clean a LTO drive when it's requested, as the cleaning media itself is more abrasive than a standard tape.

Sounds like it may be the cleaning light (far right)

You need to use a cleaning tape in the drive (they do expire after either 20 or 40 uses so use a brand new one to be sure)

That should clear the light. If it comes back on after another backup then try using the cleaning tape again and then a brand new tape for the backup.
If the light comes on again then the drive will need to go for repair as the head is knackered.

Try for this as they are pretty good price wise and also offer a 1 years warranty on their drives and repairs

SDLT 600 dont detect the correct media size, for example, it detect 100gigs and has to detect up to 600gigs

Are you using the right media? These drives can take older smaller capacity tapes!

If you are indeed using the SDLT600 R/W Media in a SDLT600 drive then can you actually get more than 400 GB on the tape?

If yes then it is just a glitch in the software that you can ignore if no then i still think it is a software problem and you might need to try changing backup software to see if the fault changes

Cleaning tape - how often should this be done?

You only need to use the cleaning tape when the amber light indicators!
There is no need to use it everytime you use different tapes, just when the light indicators will do as you can only use cleaning tape a certain number of times before replacing it.

My Drive will not eject the tape

Turn off the tape drive. (Switch in the back of the unit. Wait 2 minutes and then turn unit back on. Tape drive should issue a write data command and then rewind the tape. After rewind completes the tape should eject. If it does not eject after rrewind completes than try holding the eject button for 5 seconds to attempt a "force eject"

Note: Do not repeatedly press the eject button as this can cause damage to the tape and the tape drive.

Stops during boot

First of all the DS20 is an Alpha box not a VAX. The problem here is usually an adress conflict. These tape drives are usually device 500. Try placing the drive onto a different controller card. That should resolve the problem.
