Have fitted a new magneto but cannot get any spark.Should there be any gap between the contacts.My whipper snipper is about 10 years old

If your engine is 11 years old it will have points @condensor under flywheel there are two wires coming from the condensor one goes to the coil and the other goes to a ground switch thats most of the time on the throotle linkage,if that wire is grounded against metal there will be not spark . the gap between coil and flywheel is 10 thousands (you can use an index card to set it .

have a close look at the run/stop switch could well be that switch playing you up
