Try this,it wont cost anything but time.Remove the ignition switch(not the key lock) But leave it plugged in. Place the key lock in the run position. Using a screw driver turn the ignition switch and start the car. Does it still ding? It Should... If yes, push in the little white stem on the key lock with your finger.(on the tip BETWEEN where it was connected to the wired ignition switch) Does it stop? If yes, either the little stem has worn down or a dent has worn into the plastic electrical ignition switch. You will have to decide which is not right. But that is the part that sets off the "Key Left In Car" ding.

Hi Missy , There are a number of thing's that can cause this . Fuel system problems , ignition system problems , the PCM - powertrain control module , the PCM is the engine computer ! There are multiple sensors on this vehicle as with all cars for the 80's on . From 1996 on they have more electronic modules then before , Anti-theft systems , air bags, anti - lock brakes etc.
Does you car have any lights light on the dash ? check engine ? Security ?. When you first turn on your key the dash lights light up an after 7 seconds the lights should go out , Do they ? You should check for DTC's - diagnostic trouble codes . That means hooking your car up to a scan tool . If it starts an shuts back off right away I would think a anti-theft system problem . If the anti-theft thinks it being stolen it disables the fuel injection in some cases !
Plenty of wires run around the back of the engine and transmission. Sounds like you may have caught some in between the engine and transmission when putting them together. This would definitely cause a problem like this. I been there and done it.
sounds like the ignition switch is shorting out or it has an ignition ground problem. try wiggling the key when it does next time and see what happens.
I'm assuming that the key is removed from the ignition and it's still chiming.. Take some lock lube spray and spray a bit in your ignition key slot. Then take the key and insert it in and out a few times. This may release a stuck contact in the ign. switch. The chime will also sound if the lights are left on...worth a check too. These are cheap fix/checks...hope they help. k
you have crossed the ignition wire some place up top before the starter! look close at the configuration up top and be sure start is grounded to block!good luck
I had the same problem with my 1998 Cavalier and it was the wiring harness which fortunately is under recall if you call your Chevrolet dealership in your area.
The lock warning light is showing on dash -
