I see nothing in the view finder but a couple of purple lines . I tried changing settings and everything I could think of. I read the manuel multiple times but it doesn't mention this.

When trying to take a picture the view finder turns dark and purple with lines. What is causing this problem

If the screen is showing this only when exposing to light ,it is possible that the imager, the CCD= has gone weak or is failing.
It is also possible that you might have got the CCD damaged by high exposure to brright light, high intensity like the direct SUN.
It might be expensive to have this changed but you must take a confirmed opinion , get the estimate and decide.
Hope my advice helps.

Looking at the screen and through the view finder, all looks green and purple? How can I fix this, I changed a setting somehow

I just tried changing the film type settings on my S5000. (the blue button, standard, chr, b/w) None of those changed the colors to purple and green. It may be that the camera has a failing CCD. It would be a rather expensive repair and not a DIY.

Hi
I have got an S5000 that I can still view previously taken pictures from the card, but when trying to take pictures the screen and view finder shows a peculiar distorted purple and green picture and any picture taken is just a green blur.
I contacted Fuji and they say they can repair it for £90 (about $120)

Black and white lines in view finder

Screen or main board failure. If it is still under warranty you may have a chance bit if over a year or so old - not worth considering for repair- though you could try. take a look through the file here http://www.fixya.com/support/p423-nikon_coolpix_5600_digital_camera/solutions
