Question about IBM ThinkPad 380ED
After the RAM test it displays 161 & 163 Errors. I enter the Date/Time but it goes back to showing the same error.
SOLVED! I had this problem with my Thinkpad 380D and FIXED IT.
No soldering, no expensive replacements, no special batteries needed.
Take a small screwdriver and open the panel on the underside of the computer, right above the big battery pack area. Inside you will see a watch battery sitting in a little round plastic cradle. The battery pops out easily with a small screwdriver. Buy a new battery at an electronics, radio, or jewelry store. You can bring the old one in to match it to a new one. Mine was a CR1220 and cost $5. Pop the new one into the plastic cradle, replace the panel, and turn your computer on. Now, after you reset the time, the computer should boot normally. This worked for a 380D. Don't know if it would work for other models, but 3880ED is probably similar.
