Is it a new 4GB memory card? If so that might be your problem. The card would likely be an SDHC card, and your camera was designed well before the SDHC format came out. Your camera can only use standard SD cards (2GB or less).
But if the card is less than 2GB, it could have become corrupted. In this case you could try formatting the card in the camera to see if this would rejuvenate it. This will also erase the card. See this post if you wish to first recover those pictures.
Finally, if this is occurring with multiple cards, and is also saying "card locked" even though the tiny slide switch is in the unlocked position, then see this post for a possible remedy.
I've A520. Recently I bought a 4 gig card and I got teh messgae in my cam that memory card error and later I came to know that A520 doesnot supoport it.
Fine I switched back to my old 512 MB card but strangely that is also saying the same now.(Memory card error0.
I tried to format it but could not.
I tried to power it on using view mode (to format it) but it is not at all powering up.
Also I powered it on using shoot mode and tried to put in view mode but if I do so then it automatically gets power off

Check the slot and see if the pins inside are fine, no breakages, free from dust etc. Try turning the camera on and off (completely remove batteries etc).

Usually, this means you need to format the card in the camera before using. This completely erases the card and optimizes it for the camera.

I'm guessing that you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with your camera.
You'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.
