I have a Sharp r-1471a that just quit working. No power, nothing! I am thinking that it is a thermal fuse. Could that be the problem. If so, where is it located on the control panel?

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2008

I put it on minute plus (times two) this morning and after maybe 15 seconds there was a 1/2 second or so buzz and it quit.
No fan, no light, no clock display.
There IS power on the cord that it plugs into.

The "buzz" .... well, I had just left the kitchen and wasn't exactly listening to it, but I've heard similar noises from stalled motors. So...
The fans at the top turn freely. The turn-table can be turned, not freely but about what I would expect going backwards through a gear reduction drive.

Pushed minute plus and it worked for 20 seconds, heard a buzz for 1 second and it died. No lights, but outlet is fine. I took off control panel and I see no fuse. Do I need to remove circuit board to get at fuse. Is there a fuse?

A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open. Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or fuse holder.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

What causes microwave to blow new fuse?

The only thing inside a microwave oven that draws enough current to blow a fuse is the magnetron that generates the microwaves to provide the cooking power. Based on the age of the unit (approx 15 years) it is most likely best to just replace it as repairs at that level are not cost effective. Newer units cook better and faster using less power these days.

Sharp R-1880-L microwave convection oven, year built 2007. Is there a repair manual for this unit. I have power to unit, no indication of power in unit. no lights no display, I figured it was a main fuse....

Any repair on any electrical appliance should be done with the plug removed from the power socket. Microwave ovens are dangerous and has been known to kill people. Rather be safe than sorry. If a fuse is suspected, make sure to unplug first. It should be discharged as it can, even after switching off, cause a very nasty shock.

Model r1200 sharp microwave display does not lite, have replaced twice and other people who have purchased have the same problem. Does the new version 2 color display replace my display

Sharp microwave is a very good unit. If you have done same repair twice before, i suggest replace board complete with display next time as there could very possibly be a set of defective components on the old board that is causing this display problem. Have done this repair before and noted how thin the tracks are also. Honestly go for new board if you can.

Sharp Microwave Lights Up, But Won't Rotate or Cook

Hi. I would suggest checking out the door switches. There are usually 3. If one of those has failed then the microwave won't operate because of safety reasons. Best to replace all three. If the display on the unit is still fully operational I'd say go for the repair.

Assuming the unit works ok other than the display, you have a problem common to many Sharp models.

Check with - lots of info on this issue and they offer a repair service for the boards at a very reasonable price.
