Re: maxtor one touch iii not recognized

Does Windows recognize that there is anything plugged in at all?

If not it could be your USB interface (on the Maxtor) is shot.

The Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition series ...i have a I/O device error and dont want to open...

If your external harddrive came with software, you may want to reinstall it. If not you may have to go the the website for the Maxtor One Touch 3 and download the driver for the unit.

You may also want to open the device manager and check to see if your usb port is having trouble. More than likely it is the driver itself>

First I will want you to know that support for win98 has long reached end of life. I don't think that win98 support mass storage unit of that capacity. I will suggest you opgrade your os to winXP

My windows 7 does not recognize my maxtor hard drive. any ideas. thanks len

I have a Maxtor One Touch III Mini, 60 GB hard drive and I had the same problem with Windows 7. It recognized my drive to do a Windows Easy Transfer from my old computer to my new one, but it didn't recognize the software. I was not able to open files on the drive or download to it for a back up. I just did a "chat" with Maxtor/Seagate tech support, and they told me I could download Seagate Manager software for the Free Agent series, and that would work. They advised me to go to
They gave me a certificate validation code, which was only valid for a short time, and that brought me to the Seagate Manager Installer. I downloaded it a few minutes ago, and it works fine and is compatible with Windows 7. My drive works again.

I suggest anyone having a problem contact Maxtor/Seagate via chat or e-mail (there is a charge for telephone tech support) and tell them your issue. They were able to help me. By the way, their forums and tech support Q&A's did not help me. I had to contact someone to get what I needed.

Light turns on but My Computer does not recognize the drive

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

Device not working

Most of the time when you get error messages like this it is due too drivers. Now in order to determine this issue I need to know what type of computer you have, OS installed on it, how old the PC etc. Please advise!
