this is a really stupid quesiton, but where is the imput for an external device?

MasterUsually on the rear of the radio, unless it is an obvious headphone-like jack on the front display. Depending on the model there may be inputs similar to the cables used on your tv, or other types of input connectors that are usually labeled, stamped into the case of the unit.
