Western Digital Passport portable hard dri...

I have a brand new Western Digital ''My Passport'' Essesntial Portable Hard Drive. I started a sync to copy all my fixed disk drives to the portable. A window opened up & stayed for awhile showing the progress of the sync (this window also had a ''stop'' option), however, for some reason the window closed. The drive has been running forever (lights still flashing). I wanted to stop it by going to 'remove hardware' but when I click ''stop'' it tells me that the ''device can't be stopped right now - try stopping the device again later''. I have tried multiple times throughout the day w/same message. Is it ok to stop it thru the task manager (if it will let me) & if not ok to try that or task manager won't let me stop thru there, what else can/should I do to get it to stop? Thanks.

- I hate to appear clueless here but should I do a complete power down or just a soft boot?

- I did that & all "appears" to be ok. I powered down completely (w/out unplugging WD) & when I powered back up the PC recognized the WD drive. I checked & it looks like all the files I wanted to go to the Passport *did* during the (very long) sync process. I used the "removed hardware" & stopped the drive then unplugged it. Plugged the WD back in this morning & it appears that so far all is well. I wasn't sure about shutting down in the middle of whatever it was doing yesterday when the lights were flashing so that's why I hadn't even considered just shutting it down. I want to THANK YOU!! so much for your assistance & you were so fast getting an answer to me too!!

Shut Down your PC and do not unplug it. Just Shut Down your PC.
