Question about Canon PowerShot A85 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Canon a85 only works with no Memory Card.

I have had that a85 for less than a year, and went to use it, and it would not turn on. I knew the batteries were charged, but went ahead and put new ones in. Nothing. So I took the memory card out to put another one in. Still nothing. So took the memory card out and turned it on. Bam, camera works, only with no memory card. While trying to figure this out, the camera came on twice with a memory card in, and said memory card error. All the cards were formated correctly. Im lost here and, need a digicam, any help is well appericated.

Will not turn on have replaced batteries

Things to check first are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Details on what needs to be checked may be seen here. It won't work for every case, but it's worth a try.

What size in inches is a A85 memory card. I put

The A85 uses a Type 1 Compact Flash (CF) card. If you're trying to put an SD card into the slot, it won't work. Using a strong light, check carefully in the card slot that you haven't bent any pins before inserting a CF card.

Camera wont turn on, intermittent red power coming on

This may or may not work (it's primarily a trick for certain Canon cameras with similar symptoms). Remove the cameras battery, then remove the memory card. Insert a BRAND NEW or fully charged rechargeable batteries. DO NOT insert the memory card. Instead, just turn on the camera. If the lens retracts, turn off the camera, insert the memory card, then restart the camera.

If this doesn't work, here are some other things to try. But don't get your hopes up, as they only seem to work for little less than half the cameras with similar problems:

Canon A85 has stopped shooting

The A85 has had problems with the operations deck assy which contains the primary controls that the customer uses to operate the camera. If this is the problem, the part is approx. $60 from Canon, I am not sure what they charge for labor to replace the bad component. Good Luck to you. Joe Weibel

LCD Screen = Kaput?

It's a wild guess, but I have a visual image of the shutter mechanism getting stuck during the rapid release thing. I heard it can sometimes be fixed by tapping gently on the lens area. Whatever comes to mind has to do with the camera being over taxed during that shooting session, and something got jammed or blown. Hard to find someone qualified that will work on digital cameras for less than the fortune the manufacturers ask for, but it won't hurt to look. You could call Canon and tell them what happened, say that it's hardly over a year and that it's likely a design flaw with the rapid-picture thing. maybe you'll get lucky... ;=] When you changed batteries, how long was the camera battery-less? If not long try resting it sans battery for a good few hours, maybe it will come back from the dead. Hope you find a way, let us know
