Dropped WD My Book 500GB

My Western Digital external hard drive fell off a desk when I moved my computer. It's had a couple shorter falls before but recovered fine. This time, the ring around the power button lights up when I plug it in to the power source but my computer won't recognize it. When it turns on it hums for a second and then, very quietly, squeaks like an old hinge. A moment after that it stops making any noise or vibrations, but the light remains on. It used to take a moment to show up in My Computer but now it doesn't display at all.

Sounds like the end. One thing I've tried, with some limited success, is to put the drive in a freezer for several hours. I've had the drives work for a little while; longer if I wrapped them in ice packs. This worked on drives that were working and stopped; I don't know about one that was dropped. Doesn't cost anything; worth a try. One thing; if it does work, get the files off right away. It never works for long.

Hi there! i hope you can help me with my problem, im using WD harddrives the 5GB I bought it a couple of days ago and i just dropped it last from my bag, now its not working even do its readable on the...

Hard drives are very susceptible to fall damage as they have moving parts. See if it's a power problem and look inside for any internal damage. If the data inside is really important then you should bring it to a data recovery center to obtain your data. Otherwise, hand it in for warranty since it's new!

Why is there a question mark on my WD My Book 500 external Hard drive short cut?

Wow, Im amazed at the guy who threw his WD into the freezer for a week after a fatal crash and was able to get most of his stuff back! I was so frustrated after my second WD crashed that I gave up and used it as a door stopper. I was too bummed out to even bother returning it for an exchange, and when I did think of doing that, it was too late. I decided never to buy WD again, their drives are pure junk!

Left my wd book elite unplugged awhile. now computer won't recognize it. plugged in same way and in same position on my desk

Try plugging the usb cable directly to a usb port on your computer and not through a usb hub. Also make sure the ac adapter for the Western Digital is getting power and the light on the drive is on. Also a recent update to your virus program could be blocking it( it happened to mine).

Western Digital MYBOOK 500GB external harddrive won't come on. When it plugs in, the blue light comes on for about a second. Computer does not recognize drive.

It is "dead". If it is still under warranty (check 'www.wdc.com' for details), then Western Digital will replace it. If not, check their web-site, for their "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., since you bought one W.D. disk-drive, you can get a discount on buying another W.D. disk-drive, if you order online from W.D.'s web-site.

Western Digital External Hard Drive Won't Boot Up

Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.
