Clarification Request

Ok, first off i have a dell Inspiron 1420 i was playing a game called Lunia then i leave for a mere 3 minutes to get a soda. Once i return i notice that the screen was black. Thinking that it simply turned off the monitor or went to sleep i moved the cursor around and still black so i presumed it was in sleep mode, so i as lazy as i am manually shut it off in less than 7 seconds. Giving it time to completely shut off i wait 10 seconds then i attempt to turn it on. But to my surprise it stayed black i mean it looked like it was turning on normally like how it should but it didn't it just stayed as a black screen. Thing is though that i didn't need to hold the power button as it normally does. But just a mere press in the button turns it off while it is in black mode. Again i do the same thing in turning it on and again it stayed all black not showing anything at all i can't even see when i press f12 or f2 it's just a black screen and so cannot even see the welcome screen. So what can i do to fix this?

-   i have also chose the option to run starup repair when it comes up and did a system restore but still no luck. safe mode loads up fine but keyboard and touchpad are inoperable. i have also tried to run a memory test and it got all the way to like 95% and failed and restarted the computer. If anyone can lend any help to these problem it would be thankful. -   b_randon14

-   Hi, I have the same problem, I just got my HP DV2700t special edition laptop, I set it up and it worked fine for a few hours and then it stopped responding. I used the power button to switch it off and when i tried to switch it back on, all the led would glow, the power inlet was blue indicating power supply. but the screen is black. there is absolutely no activity. i took the battery out, plugged out the ac adapter, and put them back in, but nothing happened. I reseated the memory cards, and still no change. I do not know what else to do. I guess I'll just get an exchange laptop. -   Guest

Try reseating the memory modules and powering back up. This is a common problem and a common fix. If that doesn't do it, try reseating the hard drive. If that doesn't work, get back to me with more details and we'll go from there.
Thanks!

ok, hubby had this problem on his Compaq...black screen...seemed to be doing something as the cd drive would spin, all lights came on, but black screen. Don't know how long this will work, but try pressing the frame above the F6 key when you boot up. (I know it sounds weird, but work with me!)
There is something about this being where the video card attaches to the mother board and no clue how long it will continue to solve the problem. It will give you enough time to at least retrieve data you need off of your hard drive and burn to cd(s). I think the video card is integrated into the motherboard, thus once it dies completely, you'll still have all of your data backed up as it will be as expensive to replace the motherboard as it will to buy a new laptop!
Good luck! (We are furiously backing up data as I type!!!!)

I have the same problem. However, I hooked my laptop to my nephew's desktop monitor and realized that even though I didn't see anything happening there was still life in the computer. Try it and see if you can see anything using another monitor. turn off the laptop and unplug the adapter from the laptop, hook the monitor up (must be off and unplugged before hooking it to your laptop, once everyting is hooked up turn on the monitor and boot up your laptop and see if you can access your laptop and fix the problem.

My computer powers on with all lights (including the charge light, and hard drive activity light), but that is all. I tried removing the CMOS Battery and that didn't do a single thing. Just to be on the safe side I left the battery out all night so I was sure the BIOS would be reset. I am not sure how to reset the ram or the hard drive so a little guidance on that would be great.

I turn my lap top on and every light turns on besides the charge one and I belive the hard drive activety one and my screen is just black.

The laptop froze during play..The sound stuck like a broken record except in one place like it was jammed.. We had to take out the battery to turn it off. We now see the HP logo then nothing.. If u hit a key it flashes and says, operating system not found.

Hi, I seem to be having the same problem. I reseated the RAM dimms and the hard drive and doesn't work. I've also tried resetting the bios by disconnecting the little battery for a few minutes.
