Did you try to disengage the safety feature that should shut the tractor off when the blades are engaged and the tractor is placed in reverse? I believe that it is located under the shift leaver

SOURCE: When I engage the mower blades, the tractor tries to stall

Besides the reverse switch, the seat switch will also cause this.

SOURCE: Craftsman riding mower noise when blades engaged

With blades on and engine off reach under and wiggle each blade up and down. If you have excess play you will need bearings.

Mower blades won't engage

Did the smoking stop when you disengaged the blades? If so it is most likely your belt that is smoking. Make sure all the blades turn freely by hand to ensure you have not hit anything that may have bent a shaft on one of the blades. If one of the shafts is bent and wont turn FREELY, the belt driving the blades would slip and start smoking as it tried to turn them.

Why won't blade engagement lever move?

The cable is rusted, not allowing it to move,or there is something jamming the mechanical parts on the deck.

Engine stalls

could be a stuck pulley or bearing, or debris in the cutting deck. make sure the blades turn freely with mower off and blades dissengaged. If they dont, remove the deck and check all of the pulleys for freeness.

Tractor starts fine on full choke, but as soon as you put it on throttle it cuts out. it also cant sustain it if you engage gear or turn on the blades to start cutting

You may have something stuck in the mower deck. If you nuse a mirror you can look under the deck and see if anything is jammed there. If the blades are jammed it will stall the motor.

Stalls when engaging cutter blades

The shaft that holds the blade could be rapped with something or needs a new bearing. Check again next to the deck, try a little WD 40 on the bearing.
