Sounds like a head gasket failure, not a radiator hose problem.

Very important to answer this: Is the oil you see reddish in color or brown like from engine? Is there any coolant in your engine oil? While waiting for answer, do not drive it!!

more likely Curt Downs has right answer. When engine warmed little open reserver tank cap( very CAREFUL so much pressure) slightly open and close then you will hear whistle sound and coolant bubbles up that's the indication of head gasket is gone. Good luck!

I don't have a diagram but I'm looking for the hose that controls the noise coming from the manifold.

I don't have a diagram, but your problem is the oil cooler underneath the intake on top of the engine. Remove the intake, and the cooler is right there in between the heads. Easy to change once you get the intake off. This is a VERY common problem on Cateras, and the symptom of it is oil in your coolant. I have a 1998 Catera and had the same issue.

Hello! It is extremely important that you only use Dex-Cool in your Cadillac's cooling system...It is Orange in color...If you have used another coolant or the block has not been flushed in some time, flushing is needed...

Drain the cooling system...Do not remove the thermostat...Fill radiator with drinkable water...Turn heat on full...Run engine until thermostat opens...Shut down, let cool then drain...Do this several times until water comes out clean...Replace thermostat...Replace O-rings on thermostat pipe...Coat thermostat bolts with Permatex...Re-fill with Dex-Cool...

Here is Vacuum Diagram...

Why is water resevoir keeps getting contaminated, oil cap is clean ,car isn't smoking, look's like gunk in it .

oil is getting into the cooling system through the oil cooler. the oil cooler is located under the intake manifold. After replacing oil cooler you need to flush the cooling system several times to remove all of the oil sludge

Where is the thermostate located on a 1998 cadillac catera 3.0 v6 engine

Hi Friend:

To Locate your thermastat, Open your Hood and look down at the top of your radiator. You'll see a Top Raditor Hose that goes from your radiator to your Thermastat Housing.

You'll see a Hose clamp on the Thermastat housing .

NOTE: before you loosen the Hose Clamp Make sure you your car is cooled down and remove your radiator cap to release any pressure that is in your system.

After the Hose is off you'll see a Domed shaped Housing that is your Thermastat Housing. Remove the Bolts that Hold the Housing on and Seals the Cooling System. From Leaking out of the Housing.

After removing the Housing you'll see your Thermastat .Just remove it and Clean up all old gasket Material so you can replace the gasket with your new one .But put in your new thermastat 1st.

Then make sure you seal the gasket with Gasket Glue. And Replace the Housing Bolts and Tighten up good and Sung.

Put back on your hose then clamp. And Refill your Radiator with Coolant.

This will get your new thermastat in and get you Ready to go .

98 Cadillac Northstar motor running hot in 30 min.

The normal operating temperature for the Northstar engine is around 210 degrees.
The fans will not come on until the temp hits 225 degrees.

The thermostat in the northstar engine is located at the bottom radiator hose (unlike most conventional cooling systems).

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage. The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side to near the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

If the other end of your purge line is not connected to anything then that is the problem......it must be reconnected otherwise the cooling system is not pressurized.

Oil in water

if it is oil .you should notice the oil level drop ,even a small amount ,this would indicate a blown head gasket. but if it is transmission fluid it will be the oil cooler in the bottom of the radiator that cools the transmission fluid .has sprung a leak which is easily fixed at a radiator service centre, the headgasket is a bit bigger job but no real drama .radiator people will be able to tell you if it is oil or tranny fluid
