Question about Standard (CRT) Televisions
While watching, the picture went black -- can still see/read captions from shows and the TV's channel display still shows, but there is no picture for any of the channels nor from inputs like the DVD player and VHS.
Seems obvious that the picture tube is the problem -- is this something to repair myself (I can do basic electronic repairs)?
Any suggested parts stores?
Thank you for any help and your time!
SOURCE: TV picture flickers
If your DVD player is separate from your tv, you might have a loose cable plug or connection. Depending on the type of flicker you have, a vertical circuit loose connection would cause this. If you could connect it to a cable or antenna it might tell you where the problem is located. A faulty circuit in the DVD might cause this too. Stargazer

SOURCE: AV channel on magnavox tv
You should have an "input" or "Source" button that woill allow you to cycle through the inputs available on that unit. Set the DVD up and play it / plugged into one the available in sources. Then cycle through the inputs till you locate it...
Some smaller TV's you can use the TV/VCR button to cycle through and still others will allow changing the channel below channel 2 to get there...

SOURCE: input problem
If you have the original remote, hit video, source, or input button, if it dont have them, then try to change the tv to channel 00 (zero or zerozero), if not then the channels might have to scroll to it, from channel 02 down to make it loop, if it goes to the next highest channel, then you need a remote. It may be set in the menu options to have the video source not saved to your list of saved channels. when you scan the channels, the tv might not look for the A/V source (audio / video), maybe just the RF source. The 3 DVD RCA wires are 1 video and 2 stereo, one stereo for left and one stereo for right. The TV has only 2 , 1 for video and 1 for mono 1 channel sound. This wouldnt have anything to do with why you cant use the DVD player. but try that with the original remote (or a universal remote that is set to your tv set that has either video, input, source or something similar. It is what tells the tv to change from the cable source (RF) and the AV source (the Red White and Yellow plugs, in your TV's case, 2 plugs, one yellow and the other either red or white or something). Dont really know how to explain it much more but hope it helps.

The tv has been accidentally set for "demo mode". Press the volume up and volume down buttons in front of the TV at the same time for about 5 to 10 seconds untill the demo disappears or sometimes the TV will turn off. You should regain control of the TV after this.
