There is no software that can make the computer fail before the BIOS posts. Very little that won't at least allow the kernel to boot. So you can always at least get to the BIOS which loads from a chip, not from your drive.
If you can't, it's definitely a hardware issue and you should begin standard hardware troubleshooting on the board. If you can, boot to a utility CD/DVD and test the drive. The computer uses virtual memory which constantly shifts portions of the operating system between the hard drive and RAM. This means a heat related failure can also corrupt the data on your drive, cause restarts during RAM intensive processes like an install, and cause funny behavior.
Heat related damage is the most common problem in
laptops because they run fairly hot and people like to use them on beds
and couches which are soft and therefore block the vents. When laptops
don't ventilate properly the memory, video, and hard drives will be the
first to fail.
Be prepared to have to reload your OS and all your software if this is the case. Recovery can be very hard.
