Most often this is because the controller is already assigned to another system or lacks the charge to send/recieve a signal. The simplest way to solve this is to connect it to your PS3 via the USB charger cable, then try pressing the Home button again. If the problem persists, there is another fix; On the back of the controller next to the screw that holds it together is a very small hole. Try inserting a pin into the hole and hold it there for a few seconds, then try the above method again. This is a hard reset for the controller settings and has solved what few problems I've had with it connecting. Hope this helps!
Please try this procedure to connect the PS3 to TV..
The PS3 has a Blu-ray drive that can be
used not only for playing games but also for watching high-definition
movies. The best way to connect a PS3 to a high-definition viewing
device such as a video projector is through the PS3's high-definition
multimedia interface (HDMI) output. The HDMI connection can transmit up
to 1080p high-definition from the PS3 to the video projector using a
single cable. Attaching and setting up the HDMI cable will only take a
few minutes and will let you watch high-definition video from the PS3 on
the video projector.
Attach one end of the HDMI cable
to the HDMI output connector of the PS3. Turn the HDMI cable around if
it does not slip right into the HDMI output, because the HDMI cable can
only fit into an HDMI connector one way.
Attach the other end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI input connector
that is on the video projector. Make sure both sides of the HDMI cable
is securely pushed into the connectors of the PS3 and of the video
projector. Turn on the video projector. Press the "Menu" button on the
video projector's remote. Navigate to the "Sources" setting on the video
projector's Menu. Select "HDMI" from the "Sources" setting. Press the
"Menu" button on the remote control again to exit the Menu.
Adjusting the PS3
Turn on the PS3. Wait for the
"Home" menu to appear on the video projector, although the quality of
the video seen from the video projector will be muddied and dark.
Navigate from the "Home" menu to the "Systems" icon using the game
controller and select the "Display Settings" tab. Choose "Video Output
Settings" from the list presented in the screen that appears. Press the
right side of the directional pad on the game controller to move to the

I have the same problem. I disconnected the key, plugged the controller with its original cable. Turned the PS3 on, turning controller on, pressing Sync, connecting the key in PS3. At that state, the 4 leds start to flash slower as it detects the key. Problem is I can never connect to console. I mean I press Home and it never connects. Its been working fine before I updated PS3 to 3.5 version.
I've had this problem a few times. For me, I resolved it simply by plugging a USB cable into the PS3, and plugging the end of the USB cable into the controller. Hit the Home button and it should connect. However, it tends to lose it's connection when you unplug it so make sure you give it a full charge.
Here's how to connect it tou your ps3. Mine works perfectly guys.
1. Turn your ps3 off without the USB key given with the controller
2. Make sure your controller is off.
3. Turn on the ps3
4. Turn on the controller
5. Press on the sync. button of your controller.
6. Plug the USB key into one of your ps3's port
7. When the light above your controller starting to flash slower, just pess the home button and your controller will be sync.
You can't turn on the ps3 with this controller. So turn it on manually than press the home button of the controller to turn the controller on.
If my post doesn't solve your problem, I really don't know how to solve it. I managed to connect mine so I hope it'll be the same for you!
