Picture and sound went out at same time.

The projection lamp is gone and needs replacement. The lamp typically lasts about 8,000 hours on high end models and 1,000-2000 hours on cheaper models.LED technology based lamps lasts for about 20,000 hours. Operating the TV in a warm environment without enough ventilation or at high elevations reduces the lamp life. Setting the color or contrast to a lower level increases the lamp life.
Here's how to replace the lamp:
  1. Turn your TV off. Let it sit there for about 5 minutes to let the cooling fan help cool the lamp.
  2. Unplug your TV from the power let it sit about another 30 minutes.
  3. Usually the lamp has a cover that you will need to unscrew. Most manufactures use a Philips head screw for holding the cover shut. Unscrew the lamp cover.
  4. Unpack the replacement lamp. Be careful not to tough the glass, as oil from your fingers can damage the lamp's surface.
  5. Pull the lamp out. Most lamps have a plastic tab or hoop on the handle that you can use to pull it out. Follow the owners manual for specific instructions on how to pull the lamp out. Make sure you do not touch the surrounding lamp housing if you just turned off the TV. It can burn you if it is hot.
  6. After the lamp has cooled, place it into the empty box of the replacement lamp. Never put the used lamp into a plastic bag.
  7. Using the guiding post also called "gutters" by some manufactures slide the lamp replacement lamp in pushing it until you hear a firm click.
  8. Screw the lamp cover back in.

My 27 inch orion tv picture looks like hour glass

you have to make sure that if you are using external/additional speakers that you keep them away from console. I had a similar problem when I install a surround sound system in by bar and one of the speakers was very close to the TV. A good friend of mine walked in and said "if you want to get rid of that picture problem and save the life of the TV you had better move that speaker." It has to do with the magnets in the speakers.

Z50PX2D 50 in. HDTV... Problem

You have a problem with the STK convergence modules. They're on the center circuit board attached to an aluminum heat sink that's about 8" long and 6" tall. You may be able to recreate the problem (hour glass effect) by gently moving the heat sink (which the modules are connected to). This gives the hour glass effect on the picture and the advanced convergence screen. This is an indication that the modules pins aren't solidly connected (meaning soldered) properly. Remove the circuit board and clean the old solder off & resolder the modules pins to the circuit board reconnected the board and then retest by again pushing on the heat sink. The "factory" job was good enough for 3-4 years but the heat (and these modules do create a lot of heat) and stress created from repeated use eventually takes it's toll, weakens the pin connections and our problem occurs. take the appropriate cautions working around the high voltage of the set.
If soldering doesn't help, then the modules have died and need replacing. Don't buy the $10 cheap ones. Most of them have an upgraded version that is stronger. Also look for any burned resistors in the vicinity of the modules.
Best of luck, hope ya fix it.

Zenith 46" with a "hour-glass" picture.

If the hour glass figure is a seperation of colors that appear to be convegence mis aligned, then, the convergence ICs would be the problem. If the picture is clear and you have a bending on the sides then the pincusion circuit in the horizontal circuit is where to look. Be careful of this circuit, it does control the high voltage. The only way to have a board checked is to have an Authorized Service Center look at it. It does, however, sound like there is a cold solder joint in the power supply that has gradually opened up and now is permanantly open. Call Zenith (LG) to see who they recommend.
