Make sure the video/audio cable is plugged in correctly. Red cable into red socket, yellow into yellow and white into white. It is easy to put these cables in the wrong socket by accident and will cause no image to appear on your screen.
I was getting a white screen every time I put the power on and used the suggestion by Fionn - squeezing the camera around the screen and it worked like a charm.

had same problem on a n80 slide phone :found the ribbon conector in the phone had a split so only showed a totol white screen
Replaced ribbon cable and all was fine priced at only a few pounds
put it in DFU mode while connected to the computer.
to
do this, hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds and then
let go of the power but keep on holding the home for 10 secs. the
screen will be black and nothing will show up. go to itunes and click
on your ipod on the left. then click restore. this should work.
