The lens needs a professional camera repair service.

The probability is high that the ultrasonc lens motor or th lens internal gears are damaged, and needs replacement.

Best regards

Error 18

Something is bent or jammed service will probably cost nearly as much as a replacement camera. Sorry. You can try to cycle the zoom button on the camera a few times before you again try to power off and retract the lens but I am not optimistic of any solution short of repair or replacement.

Cannon powershot s2is camera, lense stuck open. I get beeps when I turn it on. Shows error code 18. Shuts off.

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

E 18 problem

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.

E18 error on Canon ixus40 - lens stuck

The E18 error is an error message on Canon digital cameras. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting.[1] The error has become notorious in the Canon user community as it can completely disable the camera, requiring expensive repairs.
A quick internet search for "E18" + "canon" quickly reveals hundreds of similar complaints.
ConsumerAffairs.com reports that the "lens has a feature called bellows claw, which is a gear that physically extends and retracts the lens. A piece that holds the lens, the barrier plate, is not large enough and can sometimes cause the bellows claw to malfunction, resulting in a stuck lens". The result is a black screen that only contains the error message, E18. Another problem mentioned on the site blames a sticky iris in the lens, caused by grease entering inside from the microphones built into the lens. The buildup freezes up the ability of the lens to open.

E18 ERROR SNAPPED RIBBON CABLE ON REPAIR ATTEMPT CAMERA WONT RUN NOW

Hello Dear,
You are requested to take the camera to the Canon Care Centre, but only if the Ribbon cable is removed from its locked it can be reinserted but if it is torn off, even after setting the zoom lense of your camera the Digital Zoom will not work and you will have to use the camera only with Optical Zoom.

E18 is a lens error and needs to be serviced by Canon. You may qualify for an upgrade to the S3 IS for a deep discount if you are interested.

Screen is showing E18

The E18 error message relates to a problem with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix you problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!
