My Vizio 42 in Plasma TV made a loud POP sond and the screen went blank. Sound, changing chanels and everything else works, just no picture. Tried unpluging for several minutes, no change. This problem is for all input sorces. Menue does not display. Called Vizio, and they say call repair shop. Over 1 year old and out of warrenty. Any Ideas?
My 42 Inch Vizio experienced the pop of death out-of warranty. I bought mine at Sears and they sent a technician over within a day or so. It turned out to be in the power supply and they shipped a board right out. Total including parts and labor was $280. Although no expensive TV should die after less than 2-years, Sears seems to be able to deal with repair in the home without drama.
No suggestions to fix but isn't there something about lemon laws, or "recalls" ? Just wondering. I have a 42" nad my brother has a 50" and his blew too. He purchased his at CostCo and is waiting to see if they will do anything for him. I guess if one of these sets burns someone's house down they will issue a "recall". That is a lof of money to pay for a TV and only get a year and a half out of it. Looking for answers and finding none at this point.

Your tv contains protection circuitry that would shut down the tv if the ymain was out. If the ymain had blown, you'd have no sound and just a flashing standby light. My gut tells me you need to replace the Power Supply Board (PSB). I've seen this before and after spending too much money trying to diagnose a ymain failure, I was surprised to learn that when you have sound but no picture, the psb is a gonner. Try ebay, shopjimmy.com or discount-merchant.com for a replacement.
Hello kilmertwo, my names Dave! What your TV did is called the POP OF Death! In order to repair the TV you will need to replace the Y sustain & the Z sustain board also! The loud POP noise you heard came from the Z sustain! If you take this TV to a local repair shop the cost of the repair is going to be around 800.00 big one! 450.00 parts and 350.00 labor! Not only will you be spending that amount but this is a common problem with this TV! So you take the chance of this happening again! What I'm trying to do is to save you from throwing good money after bad! Do not repair the TV! You can for the same amount of money buy a totally brand new TV! I would suggest that you buy a Panasonic! Trust me!
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions! I'll be more then happy to answer any question you may have!
This may have been the sound of electrolytic capacitors exploding. I would not suggest plugging the set back in until you can have it checked by a qualified TV technician. If you are skilled in Electronics and would like to work on this yourself, you will need:
The schematic diagram, a multimeter, a signal generator, an oscilloscope, and an isolation transformer.
