Re: locked ovens

We had this same problem in September, 2007. Ours was the result of a burned out motor on the latch assembly. I didn't want to shell out $450 for service calls (without the cost of parts), so found the following information and parts and did the repairs ourselves - for about $120 and a couple of hours work. For the record: we have no connections to, except to order parts.

You can get the range service manual at:

The part you'll probably need is:

The manual says to virtually disassemble the oven to get the part out, but my husband got around that by wrapping one end of a 3 foot piece of flexible wire tightly around the locking mechanism. He removed the back range cover, unscrewed the latch assembly and carefully drew it out without disarranging the insulation inside the range. Then he wrapped the wire around the new latch assembly and gently pulled it through to the front. Secure all parts again.
Our range has worked great since we did this fix, although he said it would've been cheaper to just replace the little motor on the latch assembly. It would be simple for someone with a moderate skill level to just pull the latch assembly out a little bit and wire a new motor on. Good luck!

Re: locked ovens

Replace part number 12001656 it is the sensor. Maytag will not help you.

My Maytag Gemini oven is displaying an F9-2 error code...I believe this has to do with the upper oven door lock mechanism...anything I can do, or does this require a service call?

F9-2 error code indicates:

  1. Door latch motor failure/jammed. Latch motor switch failure.
  2. Oven control software failure, or component failure(stuck relay).
  3. Wiring problem.
  • Press the clear key.
  • If the Clear key does not eliminate the problem, turn off the power to the range for 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.
  • It is most likely to have a failed or misaligned door lock switch.

Getting error code 9-6 on MER6770AAW maytag gemini double oven range...what and how to fix?

That code is for obstruction in the lower door lock mechanism. You need to check for a obstruction in the lower door lock. The next step would be to disconnect the power for a few minutes then turn it back on and see if the code reappears.

MAYTAG GEMINI model MER6770AAW Fault code F1-L -same code for upper and lower. After reading other comments, it appears that the temp sensor(s) are bad. I need to find part #'s and cost. Thank you Pete

Here's a late response, hopefully helpful to someone... I had the same issue with same model Maytag range. I pressed the CLEAN option on the touchpad (bottom oven) and that option seemed to work. I pressed Auto Set and I let it go through "remove oven racks" until the display panel read 100 degrees and then pressed CANCEL. About 30 seconds later, when the oven was out of "clean mode," I pressed BAKE, then Auto Set, and it's been working fine ever since...

I'm sure the sensor needs replaced and will go permanently sooner or later, but if anyone out there gets the F1-L code but hopes to at least temporarily revive your oven maybe this will do the trick.

Bottom oven lock will not lock to clean my Gemini model MER6770

The lower oven may have a problem . It could be a few different things the door latch mechanism, oven door switch, the metal rod that pulls the latch over all are quite difficult to figure out. I would recommend calling an authorized servicer on this one. good luck

Self cleaning MAytag Gemini GAS oven

A wonderful feature is that the ovens self-clean with the press of a few buttons. Only one oven can be programmed to self-clean at a time. Remove the oven racks. Turn off the oven light and close the door. Press the "Clean" button and then press "Auto Set" to automatically clean the oven for 3 hours. Press the "Auto Set" pad again to set the oven for a 4-hour clean cycle, or press the button one more time for a 2-hour cleaning. The oven locks when in cleaning mode. When the oven is finished cleaning, the word "Cleaned" will be displayed on the control panel, and the oven will remain locked until the oven has cooled, which takes about an hour. To cancel the self-clean cycle, just press the "Cancel" button. Simple!
