Motor hums but fan does not spin when the wall switch is turned on

My fan is doing the same thing. It just hums when I turn on the fan. I tried spin it and there doesn't appear to be anything mechanically wrong. Then I tried to spin it and quickly turn it on, but it doesn't turn the blades.

Any ideas on a next move? Is the motor bad at this point?

1. Try to rotate it by free hand and see it is free machanically. If not, it ball-bearing/bush should require lubrication or replacement.(Note at this satage there should be no electric supply to fan.)
2.If it is free, rotate it fast by hand, then immediately switch it on.
a)If it continue to rotate, then there is fault in capacitor.Replace it.
b)If not, ask me.

Ceiling fan hums as soon as power is applied. construction grade fans .

Is there a switch on the wall supplying power to the fan? If it is a light dimmer switch the fan will hum loudly. Make sure the switch is a ceiling fan speed control switch. If you have a fan and light combo and only one switch / hot lead you will need to install a simple on/off toggle switch.

Hello, I replaced a light fixture on my existing Emerson ceiling fan. The light worked right away but the blades didn't turn. I could hear power going to the motor so I went back into the switch cup and...

Signs of a bad capacitor in a ceiling fan include:

  • Fan runs slowly or not at all on all speeds
  • Fan will not start but will spin if started by hand
  • Certain speeds are slow or do not work
  • The motor hums and turns freely by hand but will not spin

The capacitor is usually a black box inside the switch housing of the fan. If this box appears burnt or melted in any way, that is also the sign of a bad capacitor and it should be replaced.

Hello .. you should be able to find a replacement for your fan control at any building supply store, a home depot type store. Look or ask for a variable speed fan control. This is slightly different from a normal liight dimmer . You might also look for a replacement knob before replacing the whole switch, or matbe getting a replacement just to replace the knob ..

You have a rotating dimmer switch on the wall to control speed right? If so, it is the wrong type switch. The missed matched switch will cause the humming. Use a regular on/off switch and control speed with the pull string

    Quit working

first turn it off, then rotate the fan, half turn and try to turn if on again. if it start running again you have a faulty motor, and need to replace it. or if the problem continue, try replacing the switch in the wall.
