Assuming Windows and not Mac, Western Digital has some utilities to check a drive that has a light, but it sounds like it is not going to be fixable.

Drive testing may actually lose some data as part of the testing process, so if this is your only copy of the data, this is at your own risk.

SOURCE: My wd elements hard drive of 1 terabyte will not turn on

Hi,

Usually if this happens it's either a dead AC adapter or a failed circuit board inside. If you have nothing crucial on the drive take it back to the store you bought it from or contact Western Digital for warranty.

If you do have crucial files and don't want to loose them by simply warrantying the drive, take it to your local PC store and void your warranty by having the techs there move you hard drive into a new enclosure for testing. If it works in the new enclosure buy it and be on your way. If it doesn't your problems are more severe and will require some specialized assistance from a Data Recovery Pro. If this is the case ask the techs to place the HDD in a anti-static bag then reply to me with your Country, State, City and I will refer you to a nearby Pro who can access your files and save them for you.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

SOURCE: my WD 250GB passport portable hard drive is not recognized

If your system detects the connected device that is a good start. Was the drive formatted for another operating system? Certainly try the drive on another system and/or another drive on your system.

SOURCE: Elements by WD, AC Adapter Failed

There are replacement models for this 5V/1.5A power supply that the AD6008 uses.

One of them is made by a company called "Asian Power Devices" [APD] and their model number for the replacement for this particular unit is: DA-30C01.

I've seen them for sale on www.amazon.com for around $25.00.

My WD elements 1.3 TB external hardisk. It gives a buzz when connected and is not recognised by windows

It sounds like the HDD inside is dead. The USB interface may have an issue but usually clicking or buzzing is HDD failure. If you have a desktop you can try removing the hard drive from the external case and connecting it directly to the computer using a SATA cable.

Cyclic Redundancy Check error appears in wd element 1TB hard disk. how to repair to open it. It contains lots of data.

Opening the drive outside of a clean room (meaning a special room with no contaminants and air filtration) will allow the drive surface to be contaminated and cause more problems than you have. Best solution is a data recovery specialist and expected cost is in the $500 to several thousand dollar range.

Cannot read from disk, ask for installation drive

Just to clarify it is asking for the install driver? If so it should be in the portable unless you have reformatted or upgraded your laptop/computer. I went to the WD site and found this page for you. I would recommend that you check the knowledge data base and dicussion board before using any of the downloads. I hope this helps

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

My Mac will not store data on my wd external hard-drive

Take it back to where you bought it, and get a replacement,
or at least get them to demonstrate that it _does_ work, when connected to a Mac computer (not a Windows computer).
