Question about Magic Chef MCWC30MCG Compact Wine Cooler

We have a Magic Chef MCWC52B

It started making a clicking noise a couple of days ago and now the fridge will not cool. The light works but the clicking continues. We have had the fridge for 2 and 1/2 years and have never had a problem until now. Does anyone know what the problem might be or how to fix it.

The Clicking noise comes from the circular black, metal object at the bottom of the back side of the fridge. Does that sound like the compressor or the relay? How do I make sure?

OK I took the casing off the relay but could not unplug or loosen it from the compressor. We have a Magic Chef MCWC52B...I'm not sure how to detach the relay from the compressor with this model...? I did plug it back in after removing the casing and this time when it clicked, I could see a green light flicker coming from the relay. The relay also got warm once it was plugged in...

    Need more help! Thanks

The relay should pull out from the compressor straight to the left as you're facing it. What happens most often is there is a small disc inside the relay that gets oxidation on the surface which causes it to fail. What you need to do is remove the cover on the relay by prying off the C shaped clip. Once open you pull the disc out and rub both sides with fine grit sandpaper until clean then reassemble. If the disc is broken then replace the whole relay.

Can you tell where the clicking is coming from?
There is a relay switch on the compressor that will click if it shorts out or if the compressor locks up.
It could also be a thermostat problem.

Have you found your problem yet?

If it is the compressor that is locked up, it should still be covered by the 5 yr compressor warranty. You can find your warranty and service information here,

If it is the relay that has failed, you can replace it easily. You can find the part also at this site or at

That circular object is the compressor. The relay plugs onto the compressor and the wires plug to the relay.

Without test equipment, the only way to know which part you need for sure is to replace the relay.

You can unplug the relay from the compressor and shake it. If it rattles like it has come apart inside, then it is burned out.

If you replace the relay and still have the same problem, call for warranty service on the compressor. You should be able to buy the relay for around $20. It will cost over $200 to have a repair service come out and replace it.

The relay just unplugs from the compressor.

There are 2 pieces there. The relay is the brown piece and the overload is the white piece. If you saw a spark, the relay is most likely shorted out. If the compressor is locked, you won't usually see a spark, it will just hum a few seconds and click off. It would be good to replace the relay and overload both, the overload may be weak from clicking off so many times.

If you are going to unplug the wires from the relay before you have the new one, make yourself a note as to which wires plug where so there is no confusion if the replacement has a different number of terminals.

Just wanted to follow up on your problem and see if you got it fixed. Since you didn't rate either solution, the first answer got credit for solving your problem.

The light may be old, and need repairing, I would try contacting somebody local rather than buying a new one.

Fridge light doesn't work/makes ticking noise

Let the refrigerator cool for awhile without opening the door. 39 minutes should do. Then check to see if the bulb is warm or hot. If it is the door switch is bad and the light is staying on which will make the plastic expand and cracklel or tick. Hope this helps.

I have a similar magic chef wine fridge, and have had the same loud popping noise every 15-20 minutes. Its model # MCWC52B. I have had 2 different repair people out to fix, and both have said call Magic...

I have practiced this tactic for years and it has never failed. Call Magic Chef and ask to speak to a management member that is in charge of repair issues. Explain to them the issue. Tell them that you don't want a repair tech any more, you would like them to ship you a comparable unit and replace the one that you have. They can come out with the new unit and take back the broken unit and repair it in their shop, trial and error and instruct their techs as how to repair these in the future. If they won't do that, ask to speak to their supervisor and keep going up the food chain. They will cooperate, trust me. Let us know how that works for you. Be frustrated and firm.

MCWC52B wine cooler stopped cooling, compressor hot

Turn it off and place a small electric fan by compressor to cool it down.
When you turn it back on, see if you hear a clicking noise. This would indicate starting components need checking.

Re: Magic Chef

If the compressor is running but the fridge is not cooling, the gas may have leaked out of the system or the compressor is inefficient. The only way to know for sure is to connect a set of gauges to the system. You will need to call in a Refrigeration Mechanic.
