SOURCE: kohler k582 runs poorly at operating speed.

ALWAYS CHECK THE POINTS!!! 20 years operating this engine and you'd think I would know better. The points were severely pitted. Spec said .020 but actual is .013. The cold weather had me suspecting a carb problem. DOH!

Sounds as though the fuel filter may be plugged. The filter is in the tank. Take a look, see if it is visible. Remove and replace. Good luck...Lee

Assuming everything is back toether properly and was not the problem the frst place, remove the exhaust pipe to expose the exhaust ports to ensure they are not carbon block. Also check the exhaust it self for a spark arrestor screen that could hve been carbon fouled and clogged. Cannot free flow because of the problems noted above, you will not be able to run a two-stroke engine reliably.

A lean mixture can cause hunting. Locate the mixture screw on the carburettor (there are two other scrws here but these act as stops to adjust the high and idle sppeds of the engine) and after the engine warms up, try turning it a quarter of a turn anti-clockwise and see what the effect is.

Have a look at this link:

Surging engine i have a 46 inch cub cadet that surges at idle.

Surging (governor hunting) at idle is usually a fouled carburetor.

Does it not surge when engine is operated at high speed?

If it is governor hunting at both at high and low speed, then either it has a vacuum leak (unlikely) or contaminated fuel especially when fuel has ethanol. Suggest you drain the fuel from tank(s)and the carburetor fuel bowl. Then try a couple gallons of fresh fuel from a station. Don't use what you may have on hand as it too may be contaminated.

If it only hunts at low speed then less likely it is a fuel problem and the carb low speed circuit has a blockage and will need cleaning.

There is also the possibility of a fault in the safety circuit that kills the engine when PTO enabled but with the governor hunting it's likely a carburetor issue.

How to keep engine running ?

Hi Doug:
I'd drain and clean the carb, using air to blow out (gently) all the orifices. If there is a filter, make sure fuel is flowing through it, or just replace it.
Should run like a good thing after that.
Cheers.

What is the best way to clean out a clogged fuel system? I believe I put old fuel in the tank and now it won't start.

First pull the fuel line off at the carb and drain the fuel from the tank into a can. Put the fuel line back on the carb. Put fresh fuel in the tank.Try a spray of starting fluid into the carb to see if it will fire.If it fires do this a few times till it stays running.

My bike was warming up then died, has fuel in tank good flow to carb, air filter not bad, spark does look a little weak, for an 03 not many hours on it, what should i do next?

#1.) could just be a fouled spark plug.does your bike spooge alot?( leak black oily stuff from exhaust or muffler?) if so then your bike is running to rich( to much fuel to carb.)which will foul plugs often...#2.) just because you have good flow from tank to carb dont mean its getting from carb to engine you might have a parcialy pluged jet in the carb..( just remove carb take bowl off and clean with can of carb cleaner and reinstall.....If you have spark, the only thing left is fuel delivery....#3.) i left mine outside before and it rained on it and got just a little water in fuel from cap and would not run,had to drain tank and put fresh mix in and she fired right up.....should be one off these 3 things, but start with the plug first fresh mix,and if that dont do it, it will be your carb..

Hi 6000 watt generator sat for 6 months with fuel shutoff. now will only run with choke on. thanks, Glenn

Hi, sounds like derty fuel, you will need to check and clean air and fuel filters; also wash your carbretta out with lean fuel. Drain fuel tank and replace with fresh fuel.

Did you replace the pump diaphragm and gasket between the carb and fuel tank? There is also a screen on the carb and a secondary pickup 'hole' on the fuel tank that needs to be cleaned between them too. You'll see that when you take the carb off the tank.

Engine run @ half choke but will not run in run position

It's starving for fuel. What is it? Sounds like the jets are plugged in the carb. or possibly water in the gas. Remove carb., disassemble, clean and put back together. You should get a rebuild kit for it first so you have new gaskets, etc. when you reassemble. It's a little more complex than I can put in words for you here.

Also empty and clean fuel tank too and start with fresh, clean fuel.
