I believe I may have already answered this but in case you are a different person you need to put your shifter in reverse. Unbolt the leg from the motor and pull down. This will give you 3/8 of an inch play and allow you to reach in and unscrew the collier that holds the upper and lower part of the shifter rod. Once that is loosened pull down on the leg

yes!! there will be a cover in the back of the upper part of unit. you will need to remove this and disconnect the shifter from the lower end.

TRY TURNING THE FLYWHEEL TO HELP LINE UP THE SPLINES ...
OR PUT THE LOWER UNIT IN GEAR SO THAT WHEN YOU ROTATE THE PROPELLER THE SHAFT TURNS... THAT SHOULD HELP YOU LINE IT RIGHT UP

Keep spritzing water on the power head and look for heat, If not pumping, the exhaust plate on those got real hot real fast. Many had heat sensitive paint and the white turned brown pretty quick,
outboard motor manufacturers supply a long shaft leg for just this problem
Talk with your Johnson dealer and check used outboards on e bay
Lowering the whole motor may affect the boat and floatation aspects besides making it harder to steer and start
