I've got a Mac OSX10.5 (Leopard) and can't get my HP Deskjet F4180 to scan. When I press the scan button, the power light flashes which means the Mac isn't responding. When I install from the CD, the install completes, says 'click OK to configure' but then nothing pops up. In applications, the HP folder has only got 'HP Customer Participation' in it (I expected to see some other applications there). If I try to download drivers from the HP website, the install gets part way through then crashes, and I have to use force quit.
Can you please help?
Thanks
Paul

- Yes you're right, I've found out since that HP haven't released drivers yet for Leopard, but plan to do so in the near future...

-   no problem with tiger, but after instaslling leopard i had the same problem. loading down hp software didn't help either.
after all, i paid money to hp for a scanner and now i does not work and there seems to be no effort from this side to solve the problem.

Hello,
Here's what I did to get it to work:
1. I ran the HP uninstaller and removed everything.
2. I downloaded the drivers [full set, with apps] from HP and installed them.
3. I think this was the trick - Open the HP Device Manager and click Scan Preferences in the drop down menu next to Information and Settings. Click the settings tab and make sure only ONE option has the "skip scan preview window' option checked. I picked Front Panel.
Could be coincidence but it worked for me. :D Good Luck.
Thanks, This works. If you are having this problem, don't contact HP, they will keep you on the phone forever getting your info, and in the end, say they can't help you unless you pay for tech support.

I had exactly the same problem, literally everything you described and now my printing scanning and all other functions work perfectly again. This is what I did-
uninstall everything HP related with the HP uninstaller program
go to this link-
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-56704-2&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3177566&os=219&lang=en
and download the whole installation file (~180M)
Run the installation and the printer was now recognised and all programs work. It did not work when I tried installing off the disk like you said you were having problems with too.
