When you plug in headphones, very often they get accepted automatically and the sound port changes in the OS accordingly as well. But when you unplug them again, it happens quite often that the OS is not switching it over on its own (even still happens in win 7). Just go into the volume mixer panel/options and change the output back to the port of your speakers.

I cant hear anything without earphones

If you have left the earphone plugged in to the laptop for a long time, this may have bent the contacts in the socket, and stopped the speakers from working.

Nothing is muted, and I still cannot hear music when I try to play any. I beleive I have checked every little sound mixing detail. Is there something accidentally shut off somewhere? Or is my laptop...

a difficult question to answer

One other way of checking the sound to the speakers is not compromised is to insert and earphone in to see if there is sound. The plugs in the speaker holes have a strip of metal that disengages the speakers and connects them to the plug. if on removal these do not return to the speaker side of the circuit there will be no sound via the speakers.

The sound on both my old IBM laptops (T40 & X31) no longer work.

Try pressing the sound up button on the top of the keyborad. There are 3 buttons sound up, sound down and mute. It appears that the sound control on windows is independant of the buttons.

I have no sound on my HP Pavillion laptop

I had the same problem, but now its solved!

Brieftly speaking, my internal speaker stopped producing sound, but when I plug earphones in, there is sound in the earphones.

Just plug in-and-out ur earphones several times (it took me 5 tries) and voila internal speakers work again!

I think there is a mechanical sensor inside the sound output (plug for the earphone) so that once it senses a plug getting in, it shuts internal speaker.

Maybe the mechanical sensor was jammed (spring problem i guess) and it still believe that u have ur earphones plugged-in. "Clogging" the hole for the earphones would allow the spring to spring back to initial position...

Hope it helps
