Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

1 Answer

Hard Disk Hi, My question is about DELL inspiron 6400's Hard disk partition. When i bought this computer it came with two. One was Main C drive with almost all the space except for 10 GB recovery drive namely D. I was also told that if i did the partition i won't be able to recovery. Anyways i erased the partition and created 3 new drives. Now when i try to make a ghost of windows it says it can't do that because partitions are formatted on NTFS and it should be on FAT. I want to make a ghost, i just want to know how will i be able to do that? Plainly format a drive on FAT and put the ghost in it ? I guess i've tried that and i came up with an error. Any idea whats happening ?

My Dell Inspiron 6400 (Windows XP Home) won't reboot. It's giving me a "Loading PBR for descriptor 1 ... done" line on a black screen. What can I do to fix it. Can I salvage my content / files

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

I Have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Vista and It seems I am getting a memory or motherboard issue as the Caps and scroll lock LED's flash when I switch on and hold the FN key. Basically the laptop is not...

Getting the motherboard fixed may not be a cost effective solution.
You can salvage some of the components to use eg. the RAM and the hard disk.
Put the hard disk into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive for backups etc.

Dell Laptop Inspiron 6400 - "Stop Error Screen" appearing

This stop error means that your ntfs file system is corrupt (damage in the file system, bad hard drive data, corrupt SCSI or IDE drivers or a corrupt ntfs.sys file).

There are two ways, you might be able to fix it

1, If you still can access Windows, try to disable any backup programs, virus scanning programs or disk defragmenter tools. Try also to run a hardware diagnostics tool to detect any errors your hard drive might have. And run chkdsk /r to detect and repair any file system structural damage.

2, If you are unable to load Windows. Then you should try to access your ntfs partitions by making a ntfs boot disk with NTFS4DOS (freeware).

After you load the bootable floppy disk onto your damaged system, select either option one (1) or option three (3). If you selected option one (1), type chkdsk /r at the command prompt, and your problem should go away after the disk has been repaired.

Note! Unfortunately there is a chance that your partition is corrupt beyond repair and all of your data is lost. In that case, you need to reformat the partition to be able to use it again.

Networking with LAN

The most laptop now comming with recovery software loaded on one of their disk partition (generally D: drive). So it will help you to get back all sofware and driver as it was issued by company.
So you can use this utility to get back your OS and drivers.

If this is not the case with you. then you should go the dell website, navigate the drivers and downloads section and enter your service tag no (not model no.) and then it will give you all the supported drivers for you laptop. Download as per your requirement. And install them.

Deleted dell system restore partition

Dell usually supplies all the cd disks your computer was set up to use. the Win xp restore disk will reformat your hard drive with the original partition. I have a dell 4600C desktop and all my original stuff is on the burgundy win xp disk. the auxillary stuff is on the blue cd-s.
