works fine - just tested it. Make sure you read through the whole thread though, as the first answer isn't right. Look at the second answer from

How can I change the region settings on my Sony DAV DZ870W many thanks, Shane

When a DVD disc is created, it is encoded with a "Region number." The disc will only play on DVD players with the same Region number - for instance, a Region 3 disc won't play on a Region 1 player.
Region 1: U.S. and U.S. Territories, Canada
Region 2: Japan, Western Europe, Middle East, South Africa
Region 3: South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast and East Asia Region 4: New Zealand, Australia, Pacific Islands, Mexico, Central/
South America
Region 5: Russia and the former Soviet Union, Africa, Indian
subcontinent, North Korea Region 6: China
The only way to get around the region codes, is to rip a DVD to your computer and remove the region code. Then burn the DVD to a DVD R. There are programs around on the net, but I'm not sure it is legal in all countries.
Google for the programs.
A DVD player sometimes allows you to change the region code once. But it not even would allow you to switch back after you changed it once.

Introduction

The DVD Upgrade is an advanced modification to your DVD player, which adds extra features and enables you to get more from your machine. The upgrade supplements the DVD player and in no way harms the playback quality or removes any performance features of the machine.

Players Supported

The following DVD players are supported by this version of the DVD Upgrade:

 Sony DAV-C700
 Sony DAV-S400
 Sony DAV-S500
 Sony DAV-S800
 Sony CMT-S9D

Macrovision & CGMS disable

All DVD players have a system called Macrovision built in to the player, which is designed to stop the copying of DVD discs to video. However, this system can have adverse affects on some projectors. For this reason the DVD MOD Upgrade disables Macrovision to solve any problems.

User manual

Put your player into „Standby“ Mode and enter one of the following commands if necessary:

Remote control command Function
[0] [ENTER] Default Default region code on the player
[1] [ENTER] Region 1
[2] [ENTER] Region 2
[3] [ENTER] Region 3
[4] [ENTER] Region 4
[5] [ENTER] Region 5
[6] [ENTER] Region 6
[7] [ENTER] Region 7
[8] [ENTER] Region 8
[Arrow down] [ENTER] Only play DVDs with the selected region; auto switching OFF
[Arrow up] [ENTER] Default Auto switching ON
[PREV I<<] [ENTER] Enable video interference impulses (Macrovision ON)
[NEXT >>I] [ENTER] Default Disable video interference impulses (Macrovision OFF)
[Arrow left] [ENTER] Enable user operation prohibitions* and access restrictions
[Arrow right] [ENTER] Default Disable user operation prohibitions* and access restrictions

* The DVD can no longer prohibit you from using the fast-forward, chapter change or Audio-/Subtitle-/Angle switch. You can no longer be forced to watch intros. Just press [TITLE] or [DVD MENU] and select PLAY.

How do i fix my sony dvd dav-dz230 - 'cannot play' comes up - cleaned but will not give picture

Hi Neal,

This is probably not the technical solution you are looking for but I have a similar problem but i have tried the following it works for some discs. Put the disc in the tray and press close on the remote and do open and close for a couple of times and sometimes it suddenly starts.

I cannot find an explanation as to why this happens but below are my thoughts:
1. The player is old and perhaps the laser unit position is knackered. 2. For some reason the region code lock in the set is not able to recogonise the code on the DVD. 3. Its possessed!
:) try it and hope it works :)

Playing dvd's from another region

Your instruction manual for the Sony system will tell you what region DVDs it will play.  Also the back of the receiver unit will have a number that says what region it will play.  Look on the back of the DVD cases and they will have a region number.  Your player needs to match these numbers in order to play, unless the DVD is region 0, which means it can play on any DVD player. You can buy region free players on e-bay, which means the IT folks have tinkered around inside the DVD players to turn off the region coding.
