Question about Kenwood KDC-138 FM / AM Receiver

Kenwood KDC-138: Removed Old stereo, installed new KDC-138, I'm getting power to the plug that plugs into the back of the unit & fuse is good. I've tried pushing the reset button. Nothing comes up on the screen. You can't even tell that the power is hooked to it. Same thing happened yesterday, thought it was a bad unit & returned it this morning only to have the same trouble. This leads me to believe it's some type of security code or something programmed for shipping. Is there a start-up sequence that I'm not finding in the manual?

I don't know if this helps anyone else that might know what's going on, but I've got the same problem. In a '97 Dodge Dakota, I took out my old (Alpine, not stock) radio, spliced the new plug onto the wires, and then connected my Kenwood up to that and the antenna wire, and you can't even tell that there's power going to the unit. I'm sure all my splices are good and that there should be power going to the thing, but there's not.

Mine did the same thing when i first put it in, for some reason the only way my radio would get power is if i connected the constant power wire and the ignition power wire from the radio to the constant power wire and ignition wire from the truck all in one connection

Same exact issue. Not sure if it was the wiring harness or what but I had no voltage coming from the vehicle's red 12V line. Connected the stereo's red and yellow 12V inputs to the truck's yellow 'always on' 12V feed and it worked like a charm. Just remember to turn the stereo off when you exit the vehicle or it will run until the battery dies.

Do you have power at both supplys on the wire harness?( red and yellow) red wire will have power with the key on. Also make sure your ground is hooked up right.

How to install a Kenwood kdc 138 in a 1992 Ford Escort LX?

if its anything like my 92 ranger you take the dash apart around the radio and the stereo should unscrew, in my ranger the new cd player went in without any extra harness as it was the same size as the stock, if not you can but harnesses to go where your old stereo did, to connect the speakers you can buy a ford wiring harness from walmart or any store with an audio department. these plug in to your vehicles wiring harness so you don't have to cut it out, after that you simply match colours from the wires of the new cd player to the wiring harness

Kenwood KDC-138 Standby Question

Standby mode does not completely power down the unit it jsut does not draw as much power as when the unit is on. Also, depending on the unit, it might start back up faster in standby then from power off. You can select to have certain things displayed while in standby mode. Here is what can be selected for this unit:
Standby: displays CD loaded indicator, "STBY" indicator, and clock (when selected)
Hope this was helpful.

Kenwood KDC-138 Operation Problem

Here's the quote from the manual regarding "dcer": "The speaker wire has a short-circuit or touches the chassis of the vehicle and then the protection function is activated. Wire or insulate the speaker cable properly and press the reset button. If the "PROTECT/DCER" code does not disappear, consult your nearest service center "

I believe the manual can be downloaded from crutchfield .com after you go to the Kenwood KDC-138 page on their website. The reset button is either on the lower left of the face or, removing the face, on the lower left of the body. Hope this helps you.
