Microwave runs but doesn't heat. Can we replace the heating element ourselves?

There are no heating elements in a normal Microwave Oven: instead, an extremely dangerous High Voltage and Amperage Magnetron is used and its replacement is not considered safe for the average handyman!
Check if your unit is still under warranty and if so, take it to an approved warranty appliance repairer as directered by the manufacturer or supplier.
In any case, nowdays, the high cost of a replacement Magnetron (if you can find one) is usually more than the cost of a new equivalent Microwave oven.

Hope it helps!

Our GE Spacemaker XL Microwave Oven Model JVM1631WB 002 isn't working properly. It comes on, lights up, turntable works but does not heat food. It also sounds very different (loud) when on.

It sounds like the magnetron may have either failed or is not being supplied with the extremely high voltage required to run it.

YOUR SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT

This is a job for a professional but if you are safety clued up, here's instruction.
Make sure the !!!!any capacitors are discharged!!!!! before attempting any sort of repair.
Check the door interlock switches first then the high voltage diode with either an AVO model 8 or moving coil meter on high resistance range for short circuit, (DVM's won't show the fault!), the capacitor can fail and go short circuit, the feed fuse on the primary of the high voltage transformer and then finally, the magnetron is best checked by substitution.
Hope that helps.

GE Model # JVM1631WB makes an awful sound when cooking, and the turntable does not rotate. The sound is not normal, and may be related to the turntable not working?

Yes! On many GE models (yours included) the internal cooling fan has a built-in tap (like a transformer) that powers the turntable motor, and in some cases, the stirrer motor, too.

If the internal cooling fan does not run, the magnetron can overheat in about two minutes and overheating too much will destroy it.

If the stirrer is not running, arcing will occur which will damage the stirrer and eventually the magnetron.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

The oven should not be used - and should stay unplugged - until it is repaired.

JVM1640WB007 MICROWAVE RUNS BUT DOESN'T HEAT. WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM?

It is most common for the magnetron in GE microwaves to go out. This is the part that heats the food. Basically everything on the unit works and runs like normal but it wont heat. Check your owners manual for the warranty on the magnetron. They usually put a 5-7 year warranty on the part itself. If you dont have the owners manual check for it online. Hope this helps you.

No heat

If the fan, lites, all work and appears to be running normal but just no heat, chances are its the magnetron that has failed. Sometimes magnetron will make a deeper noise if it has failed
