It is a AUSU P4S800DX motherboard with SATA and IDE connections I am beginning to think from my readings that the IDE controller is designed for optical disk only that you must use a SATA drive. Unfortunately the SATA drive I have is a hit or miss some times the bios sees it sometimes it doesn't which from my readings seems to be a common problem with this motherboard. It is most differently not the cables but thank you for your advice.

HELLO THERE:
YOU NEED TO VERIFY THAT THE RIBBON CABLE IS PROPERLY INSERTED INTO THE MOTHERBOARD AND TO THE HARDDRIVE THERE SHOULD BE A RED STRIP ON THE RIBBON THIS GOES TO THE #1 PIN ON THE BOARD AND THE DRIVE. ALSO IF YOUR DVD DRIVE IS OPERATING SIMPLY UNPLUG THE CABLE FROM THE DRIVE AND TRY IT ON THE HARDDRIVE AND REBOOT TO BIOS AND GO TO THE HARDDRIVE SECTION TO SEE IF YOU HAVE ANY HARDDRIVE SHOWING UP NOW. THIS WILL POSITIVLY TELL YOU IF THE OTHER CABLE MIGHT NOT BE ATTACHED PROPERLY, OK? IF SO JUST MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES AND THAN REBOOT.
BEST REGARDS MIKE

How DO i Fix DVD Writer Works As CD ROM Only. Not Detecting any DVD.

There are 2 assemblies inside it.
One works to read/write CD media.
One works to read/write DVD media.
So, your device is "half-broken".
Replace it.

See new hard drive

Make sure the hard drive is on the first IDE channel, and there is no CD or DVD on the first IDE channel.
The CD-Rom or DVD should be on the second channel.

Not recognizing memory.

The Asus P4S800-X MB can use Dual channel DDR memory and single channel memory. The dual channel memory which comes in matching packs. (Normally 2 DIMMS per pack) is the faster memory.
In other words if you are installing, 4- 512MB DIMMS of PC3200 all memory should be matched,
or you're MB may not see all connected DIMM'S.

See page vii in you're manual. If you're running windows XP, Home or Pro edition the bios will show up to 4GB of memory installed but windows XP 32bit will only show 3GB of memory. As mentioned above all 4 of you're 512MB of memory should be dual channel and run at the same speed. You can run both single channel and dual channel but you must follow Table 1 in you're manual. (1-9).
Example; PC3200 400MHz.
Or 4-512MB PC2700 333MHz. See page 1-9 for memory configurations and the QVL list supported.
Check out Asus FAQ's; http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4S800D-X&product=6&os=17

This should help you configure the memory.
Good luck!

The driver detected a contoller error deviceIdeIdePort2

Most motherboards have 2 "IDE" channels.
IDE channels allow up to 2 devices (disk-drive, ZIP-drive, CD, DVD) per channel.

So, look inside your computer for two ribbon-cables from the motherboards to the devices (disk, ZIP, CD, DVD).

Then, 'port2' is the "second" of those devices.

Hi,
usually when you update or re-flash the dvd rom.
it will state :- ensure that the drive to be flashed should be jumper set as master. if there were other drives connected to the same ide channel. this could have caused damage to the other drives connected. Or the IDE Channels themselves.
The only suggestion I have for you. is to remove all the drives. disconnect the power from the computer. and remove the cmos battery, for 10-15 seconds. resetting the computers bios back to defaults. then re-settup the drives ensuring that the jumpers are correct for each drive. i.e 1 slave and 1 master on each ide cable.

Setting up a Computer to install Windows XP Professional.

Pedro -

I'll assume each of these is an IDE device, meaning each has a wide connector versus a narrow SATA connector commonly found on newer hard drives.

Your motherboard should have two IDE channels, labeled IDE 1 and IDE 2, Primary IDE and Secondary IDE, or something similar. Each IDE channel can support two devices.

For best performance between the drives, you will want to have the Hard Drive connected as Master(Drive 0) on the Primary IDE channel; The CDROM should be connected as Slave(Drive 1) on the Primary IDE channel. Connect the DVDROM as Master(Drive 0) on the Secondary IDE channel, and the ZIP Drive as Slave on the Secondary IDE channel.

When connecting the drives, make sure you set the jumpers correctly; Both the Hard Drive and the DVDROM should have their jumpers set to Master, the CDROM and Zip drives should have their jumpers set to Slave. An alternative is to set the jumpers for every drive to Cable Select(CS), allowing the physical connection of each drive to determine whether its a Master or Slave device.

*Note*
If your Hard Drive is a SATA device, connect it to the '0' or '1' SATA connector on the motherboard. Have the DVDROM set up by itsself as Master on the primary IDE channel, the CDROM as Master on the Secondary IDE channel, and the ZIP as Slave on the Secondary IDE channel.

Hope this helps!

Wiring?

outer ide channel is secondary the one above is primary.
as xp and vista doesn't matter which ide channel everything is connected, it will still look for bootable source.

Normally attach hard drives to primary and cdrom/dvd to secondary.

I dont quite get how you've got them connected so I'll tell you how I'd do it.

First of all, it is kind of standard to put the primary drive at the end of the cable but it doesnt really matter. I go with what ever physically works best.

Connect your 2 IDE devices to the same IDE channel (cable) unless you have 2 IDE channels then put each on their own channel or cable. Make sure you are using 60 conductor cables for each.

If both are on the same cable:
Set the dvd's jumper to slave.
Set the hard drive jumper to master
OR
vice versa.
*Some DVD burners do not like to be slave, or even on the same channel as another device.

The following is the ideal set up
If each is on their own channel (cable):
Set each to master

Be sure bios is set to auto detect for all channels, master & slaves.
