Not really an a "normal" length of time for a drive to function under ideal operating conditions. Hard drives like any electrical product can fall foul to manufacturing defects, but also knocks and bumps, rapid temparature changes etc...
Have had a mac book since they came out, and my hard drive is still going and it goes everywhere with me , so sometimes I guess its just badluck if your HD goes, luckily they arent too expensive to replace, any 2.5" Sata drive should do. If your mac is less than 2 yrs old, might still be under its applecare warranty, if so they will fit the drive for you free at your local apple service centre

can be a problem with hard drive.
can you check the s.m.a.r.t status of the drive to verify its health ?
its better to verify health of disk first. Normally no drivers are needed for such drives.

Verbatim usb500 Question? My macbook can't read it anymore?

If the drive did not actually fall, there is a good chance you just damaged the USB port. The jolt could have detached it from the circuit board. The case holds a normal hard drive and can be removed and placed within another case or a dock.

External hard drives come in 2 sizes, 2.5" and 3.5". If you get the case be sure you get the right size. The dock accepts both sizes.

My harddrive is kinda in a startup loop where it makes this klick/peep noise every second or so, the light in the front is just on as regular and solid. The driven also doesn't appear on my 2008 macbook.....

-it sound like your hard drive is dying.
-if you can still access the content from other computer, try backing-up your data using other drives then try reformatting it.
-if reformatting does not resolve the problem, you may need to replace it. You are lucky if it still has a warranty.

I bought this because the Apple store recommended it so that I could store a music collection off of my MacBook. What is the best way to do that so that I can free up space on my hard drive and still have...

The "BEST" way to use any "external" device is to create one MORE copy of all your important files. If your MacBook dies, you have a copy of your files.
Or, if the external device dies, your MacBook still has a copy of your files. Safe!

The "WORST" way would be to copy your files to it *AND* delete the files from your Macbook,
and then to have the external device "die", killing the ONLY copy of your files. Ouch!

1. Go to the "my computer" icon and check the C: drive to see how much space is available if less than 20 GB this may be you issue. Not enough storage space.
2. If you have a USB hard drive free. Move some unused data that you want to keep to this hard drive.
3. uninstall any programs that are not used
4. If you have used your PC extensively it may be time for a new hard drive.
5. If you haven't down a "defrag" on this hard drive in year it may well be that this is the issue also.

Problem with Fujitsu MHT2080AH hard disk drive

Nothing can be done that is as cost effective as buying a new drive. Use the drive as little as possible, back up your data before it dies completely.

A professional could rebuild it for a few hundred dollars if you have a particular attachment to this exact model. But I can't think of any reason one might choose this route rather than simply buying another drive.

HI! Yes you can upgrade your Hard drive from a 30GB (std size) to as much as 120GB. The only thing yu need to be sure of is that you need to buy a IDE 2.5" HDD which is a little bit hard to find but is still available. Try to google some suppliers online.

Hope this Helps.
