Im not sure which engine you have but most starter bolts are at the top end of the starter and bolt right to the side of the block. You have to remove the engine shroud on top first on some engines. If you have the briggs engine that is a twin cylinder and the cylinders are opposed to each other the two bolts to remove the starter are under the flywheel,if you remove the side cover on the side of the engine the starter is on you can see the one bolt head, the other one is in farther under the flywheel and can be removed with an open end wrench,it will take some patience but it can be done.

No problem; using a borrowed Husqvarna 44-don't know fuel mixtures (if any). The chamber for "oil"-is that engine oil (if so, what do you recommend) or chain saw oil (if not, is there another...

The mix fuel mix is 40:1. Use Husqvarna 2 stroke oil not the cheap stuff on sale at car service stations. The chamber for oil is for chain oil which can be bought at most places that sell or hire machinery like chainsaws, lawnmowers etc.

Can't get our Husqvarna YTH 2148 lawn tractor to start this year. I suspect it's old gas in the carburetor. Drained the remaining gas from tank and added new and everything else looks good. Battery &...

On my YTH2148 you take off the air cleaner and then the backing plate for the air cleaner and the carb is right there. If memory serves me there is a drain hole on the bottom of the carb, you can unscrew the drain bolt and the old gas is gone.

Have a 48' 23 hp husqvarna lawnmower, it drives fine, but when I go uphill it slows down quite a bit. Why?

Same reason a person slows down when he is riding a bicycle up a hill?
Does the engine nearly die when you engage the blades on the fly?
If so you may have a dead cylinder, my 2148 would mow on the flat pretty well but not an incline with one cylinder. Cause of my dead cylinder was bent pushrods, which is not unusual on V-Twin B&S. You can test this by pulling one spark plug wire off at a time and running it.

Lawnmower Starting Pull Cord Replaement

There will be a piece of casing that holds the starter mechanism in. Usually held by 4 screws (probably torx screws unless it's an old machine).
Undo these screws and you will find the cord carrier inside.
Observe how the starter dogs are located, and how it all goes together.
You may be able to remove & replace the cord without taking the carrier off the casing, but it is probably easier if you do.

Then you simply remove the old cord, thread a new cord through the hole & tie it. Reassemble the carrier onto the casing. Thread the cord out of the casing & through the handle, tie that end.
Then wind the cord around the cord carrier until there is a slight tension on the spring.
Screw the casing back on the mower and you're away.
