Unit keeps going through self check. It is acting like a hard drive on a PC when it has bad sectors. I have tried reformat (several times!) but this is not a full format. If this was in a PC I would carry out a low level format and lock out bad sectors. Can this be done if I remove the hard drive? If so what format do I reformat the drive in? Any help gratefully received.

I have an identical problem, where it takes anything from 15 seconds to half an hour to come on. If it is on the timer, parts of programs can be missed.

If the unit is up and running, and I insert a DVD or DVD RAM, the unit then goes through the Self Check routine, taking 5-10 mins to come on.

It then accepted the instructions for Dubbing to the DVD RAM, but did not complete the DUB.. I suspect a problem with the internal Power Supply Unit, but not quite sure what the first solution 'Replace the STR' referred to. I am fairly confident and handy with a soldering iron.

    Would much appreciate suggestions.

Further to my earlier post on this problem, I had a look round inside the unit, and removed the Hard drive and it's mounting plate. I did not see any leakage from capacitors on the PSU board, but maybe it has not quite got that far yet. I did notice that the power is taken to the main board via a flimsey looking connector arrangement. I applied gentle pressure to the plastic part of this, and felf a rather satisfying crunch, which suggested the the connector was not quite in it's home position. After re-assembling the unit, it came on within seconds, and has behaved it'self for the last two days. I think that was only part of the problem, because the unit still goes into self check if I insert a disk into the DVD Player/Recorder drawer.

I must say BE CAREFUL with the connectors, as they look very fragile. I think they were designed for once only connect!

I have exactly the same problem, multiple shelf checks and instant powerdowns on startup or changing a DVD. Similarly don't undserstand the offered solution. Any chance of clarification?

Further to my earlier comments. I did take out the HDD and do a low level format on it (it is a standard DOS FAT32 format) but it did no good. I then discovered that I had taken out a 5 year extended warrenty (heck knows why as I never normally do that!). I therefore took it in for repair. I have had it back since early January and so far, so good. Unfortunately there was nothing from the repair agents to say what was wrong with it.

I have discovered my E85 to have an inadequate power supply. I took the lid off, and used an ancient computer power supply to power the HDD. Since then I have not had a problem with it cutting out dead and self checking on startup whenever I tried to hi-speed access (including dubbing, finalizing, viewing Navigator etc on the DVD.) It does not have enough power to supply every component during peak actions, and just cuts itself out. But not now!

You must replace the inside "str" sheet feeding and condenser close. Everything back to normal. :-)

My dvd recorder dmr e85 h panasonic dont rec dont play movies and dont acces to hard drive what is the problem

A DVD Recorder needs to play before it can record. Not accessing the hard drive as well indicates a problem with the power supply inside, more than likely. Time for a reputable repair shop.

Pan. dmr-e85h turned itself on, self-check

Open case and look for failed capacitors, which are cylindrical and will have a bulging top and a yellow/gold substance leaking out. If this is the problem, search for previous solutions that mention "solder capacitor C1260" for the DMR-E85. I had a similar 'no power' problem with my DMR-E55 and my son and I were able to fix it Sunday. Not hard to do and mine is working again!

My Panasonic keeps on doing selfcheck and restarting

Whilst the unit is switched OFF, press and hold STOP (black square) and Channel Up ( /\ ) on the unit simultaneously for 5-10 seconds. This will cause the tray to open.
