Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

The water filter in my GE Profile Refrigerator leaked a large amount of water until we turned off the water to the refrigerator. We did not see any warnings on the LCD. It seems to me that if the filter is clogged the water should just stop and not leak around the filter. I removed and replaced the same filter and turned the water back on. It leaked. Will putting a new filter in solve the problem?

Hi

The defrost heater in the freezer section melts the frost and changes it to water, this water is suppose to flow down a drain system. If this drain system is restricted or plugged the water will leak inside the refrigerator. The drain system starts in the freezer section with a tray built under the evaporator coil. The water is funneled through a small hose into a cup in the top middle of the fresh food section (not on all models, but this is the most common way), from there, the water is directed out the back wall to a drain hose that runs down the back of the refrigerator into a condensing tray. The heat created under the fridge makes the water evaporate and disappear. Some of the cups ( in the top back of the fresh food section ) can be removed for cleaning. A turkey baster can be used to help clean out the drain system. Fill the baster with hot water and "blast" it into the drain hose to help flush it out. A piece of wire or pipe cleaner can also be pushed into the drain hoses to help clean then out. On a S x S style of fridge the drain system is in the bottom back of the freezer section and often you will have to remove the evaporator cover to access the drain hole. You can clean this out in the same manner as previously mentioned, but because of the water leaking into the freezer instead of the fresh food section you will have to remove the ice build up to clean out the drain system. For some reason Whirlpool has found a need to "hide" the drain hose inside the walls on there top freezer refrigerators. This makes accessing the drain hose to flush it out more difficult, no cup inside the fresh food section, no hose down the outside back wall and the only access is inside the freezer section behind the back false wall and under the evaporator coils.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Why my refrigerator is leaking water from the top where the water filter is located?

Shut off water supply valve. Relieve water pressure by dispensing water. Unscrew water filter. Examine to see if the gasket is damaged or if filter was loose and just needed tightening. Or simply replace water filter with the correct water filter that your GE refrigerator calls for.

I have a GE Profile Arctica refrigerator - water is leaking from the punctured plastic hose going up to the water filter (plastic hose from the bottom of the solenoid goes into refrigerator assembly)....

Good day!!!!

Refrigerators with a defrost cycle drain the melted water from the evaporator coils through a tube or a hole into a drip pan underneath the refrigerator. The water usually evaporates, but most times the pan is removable and can be drained. If this path of water is blocked at any point because the drain hole or tube is crimped or clotted with anything, it will back up inside the refrigerator area and try to find a way out, usually under the crisper drawers. To fix this, clear the obstruction in the drain tube. The drain pan at the bottom of the refrigerator can overflow or get old, crack, and develop a leak. Other times, mold can grow in the drain tube and clog it. Most refrigerators have an ice and/or water system built into them. This means that you have a waterline attached to the back of your refrigerator and it comes out as ice or cold water. Anywhere that water travels through the refrigerator and freezer can turn into a leak. To find the leak, you need to follow the tubes that carry the water through the appliance and make sure that all connections are tight.
Leaking containers or spills in the refrigerator can be misdiagnosed as leaks. First make sure that there are no puddles of juice, milk, water, etc. on one of the large capacity shelves.

I hope this solution will be helpful...Thanks for using fixya..

My 1 year old ge profile refrigerator has a serious leak problem from the refrigerator water filer. What should I do?

Check where the leak came from in the water filler, probably a pin hole will cause that. If you already located the leak then apply a small amount solvent or epoxy into it. You can buy solvent or epoxy from
hardware store. Look for a brand that is not harmful to human and especially use for water leaks.
You can do it so good luck.

Water filter replacement on a GE Profile Refrigerator

You should NOT have to turn the water off to replace the filter. I have the same refrigerator and it closes water line itself when you turn the filter and drop it down. If yours flooded, I can only imagne the valve that the filter opens when in place got stuck.

There is a valve on the wall behind your refrigerator which can be shutoff.

The old filter should be heavier as it would still have water in it. Turn them over one by so water can drain out. The one with the smallest amount of water should be the new one. I always use a sharpie and mark the filter with the install date... that way ou know when to replace and which is the old one.
