Tensioner generally has a bolt recessed within the pully. A torq wrench or ratchet with a long poll is needed to much the pully up or down. The tensioner places alot pressure on the belt to keep it on track. You will have to pull or push very hard to move it will puting the belt on.

If your engine looks the same as the video, the pump can removed without having to move other components out of the way.

Drain radiator

Loosen the pump pulley bolts with the serpentine belt still on. This will put tension on the pulley so it doesn\'t turn. Then take serpentine belt off. Then remove the four bolts on the water pump. Have a drip pan under the pump. Clean pump mating surface on the engine. Install new pump with O ring. The link below gives detailed info.

I`m pretty sure your belt tensioner pully is just held on with a couple bolts.Remove your serpentine belt, your main belt.look at the pulley see where the bolts are that hold it on and remove them. They are spring loaded so when u take it off make sure you have the new one to put on because once you remove it ,it is no good and have to put the new one on.

Serpentine belt

There is a belt tensioner that has to be moved to release the tension on the belt. Once the tensioner is moved you can remove the belt and install the new one. Sometimes you need a special tool to move the tensioner.
Make sure you have a drawing of the routing of the belt, normally there is a sticker on the hood or the radiator support.

How do you get the serpentine belt back onto a 1999 lincoln continental? we can't figure out how to put slack in the belt to get it back on the alternator.

there is a belt tensioner pulley you must lever back to produce the slack needed to slip on the belt. There is a socket type cutout behind the pulley. put in the appropriate size ratchet handle or breaker bar and move tensioner arm back against the spring tension on the pulley. slip on belt making sure the grooves of the belt are in the pulleys correctly

"HOW TO":
Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them

How do i get to the serpantine belt on 96 lincoln continental

Step 1 Inspect the belt already in your Lincoln for cracks or wear. It is best to replace serpentine belts early, before any major damage occurs, as a break in the belt will cause a critical failure in a motor vehicle while under power.
  • Step 2 Find the belt routing diagram under the hood, this can usually be found on the top of the radiator mount. Lincolns, even those of the same year model, may have different accessories run by the serpentine belt. So the exact routing of the belt will vary from vehicle to vehicle.
  • Step 3 Loosen the tensioner pulley until you can push it relatively easily. The belt should still be too tight remove, if it is not the idler pulley is malfunctioning.
  • Step 4 Unscrew the idler pulley belt until the idler pulley loosens enough to allow the belt to be removed.
  • Step 5 Make note of the direction of rotation of the serpentine belt as it is important to install the new belt in a way that it is intended to rotate.
  • Step 6 Insert the new belt in accordance with your Lincoln's belt installation chart.
  • Step 7 Tighten the idler and tensioner pulleys an assistant with a pry bar may be needed to properly tighten your Lincoln's serpentine belt.
