Toshiba Model # 42H81 Picture Problem

Color looks bad right now. We tried adjusting the colors. The only way the picture looks good is green. Does this sound like we may need a new part?

Yes, the letters are bad, thanks for the reply. How can this be fixed?

  • MamiyPapi Nov 25, 2007

Thank you so much, you have been very helpful, where exactly would the amps be located? We are having a hard time finding them. We have the cover off the front and back of the T.V. Are they located towards the back or front. Thanks again.

Can you describe the issue a little more? It may be a convergence issue which is quite common on big screens. But there are quite a few issues that can cause a bad picture.

If it's convergence, you'll be able to tell by going to a news channel and looking at the text. If the convergence is bad you'll see a ghosting like image of 2 or 3 letters for each one that should be there.

It sounds as if your convergence amps are bad. They can be purchased and replaced, but some units require other items to be replaced because fuses can associated components can blow. That's not typical though and most of the time just the amp replacement is enough.

If you are comfortable with opening the unit you can look and see what Amps your unit has and order replacements. There will be 2 of them right next to each other. and they look like this...

These are just an example and you'll have to get the actual part number off your models amps. I will say though, if you find they are STK392-110....replace them with STK392-150s

And for reference, that picture is NOT to scale. They are actually about 3 or so inches wide and maybe 1/2" thick.

The will be in the back of the TV. They will be found mounted to a separate circuit card usually. Sometimes this is mounted above the main boards in the back and sometimes it's off to the side of the main boards. They'll be standing off the board they are soldered on, but will be on a heat sink (read: piece of metal). You'll need to go by Radio Shack if you do the replacement and get some silicon based heat sink compound. This helps to leach heat off the amps and on to the metal heat sink to effectively cool the amps some. If you don't use heat sink, you'll be replacing these amps again VERY soon.

Picture looks 3d, color is to far out of adjustment

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai2_bing.gif,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

TV picture is red.

Normal color picture is composed with 3 colors R-G-B (Red-Green-Blue). Picture turns Red means: Missing Green and Blue colors (many reasons: bad contacts, projector tubes dead, and other...). Try to give some "tabs" to diagnose ... I don't know what is the type of your Projection TV, how long you owned it, to have more idea.

Red , Green And Blue.

Heres the best way to set a phillips screen controls. Go into the picture controls and set picture or contrast to roughly 75%, then set brightness to 50% and then set the color level completely off. Then adjust the screen with the 3 color controls untill you recieve the best black and white picture as possible. If you are unable to achieve a good black and white picture change the coolant in the green and blue tubes. But if you can get a good black and white picture stop there then turn your color level back up and the picture should be correct. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Toshiba MW27FPX dropped it!

See if you can borrow a TV de-magnetizer (degauss) from a tv shop...if that doesn't purify the color, then the shadow mask inside the picture tube is bad = no repair unless CRT is replaced
and that would cost more than a new TV ! ...................T.
