Can an AC run without the filter leading to the compressor

Had ac issue and called a serviceman. He said the outdoor filter was clogged, and since he did not have one he took out the filter and just welded a piece of coil to reconnect. He never replaced a filter. It got ac running again. However, now, 3 months later my compressor gave out. Is he to blame?

I would think. If there is a filter somewhere in any mechanical device, its there for a reason. Car, ac, water etc. if it has a filter it has a purpose. Sorry for the bad news, but good luck trying to get your ac to front the bill.

Our AC keeps cutting out. It runs for a few minutes then stops. have to switch off and restart. Any idea why? Have emptied water and cleaned filter recently

Look for:
  1. the ac needs air flow thru the indoor and outdoor radiators
  2. the outdoor radiator coil should get warm/hot and produce warm air.
  3. indoor radiator coil needs should get cold and produce cold air.
The ac needs the fan motor(s) working and compressor running and pumping. Compressor skinny copper line hot and thick line cold.

How to troubleshoot thermostat wiring?

I'm not sure if the thermostat is wired correctly. First, the thermostat is wired directly to the outdoor unit (compressor/condenser unit). It is NOT directly connected to the indoor unit. It connects to a low voltage control panel in the outdoor unit that sends a signal to your indoor fan/evaporator. This wire is called the fan relay switch and physically runs between the low voltage controls of the indoor and outdoor units. If the fan relay is bad it's possible that the unit runs continuously. To prevent destroying your outdoor unit there is a safety feature that prevents the indoor fan from shutting down while the outdoor unit is running. If the indoor fan did shut down while the outdoor unit was running than you would slug your compressor. That is, your compressor normally sees refrigerant gas but is instead seeing refrigerant liquid. That would not be good since this scenario would destroy your compressor. It sounds like a faulty fan relay. The actual contactor portion of the relay is in the outdoor unit.

Airconditioner will not work

Defective compressor clutch, or ground fault in the ac switch circuit.
Disconnect lead to compressor from ac switch.
Run a fused line from the battery to the compressor, if it works without blowing the fuse, check for fault in the AC switch circuit.

My central air unit comes on but it's not cool and

to me it sounds like filter are dirty, need to be cleaned or replaced, home systems, packaged or otherwise are hermetically sealed and should not need freon recharge. Always start with airflow and/or unit being set too low. An AC unit of any type will build ice if a) the filter is plugged up and can't move enough air, b) it has been run without the filter, clogging the coil, again, not moving enough air, c) setting an AC unit below 68 degrees F will almost ALWAYS cause icing, and d) running a standard AC when it's warm inside and cold outside (unless equipped for "low-ambient operation"). When in doubt, a bit of maintenance(thorough cleaning) by someone with AC skills can cure a b, common sense will cure c d.

Warning light says Low Refrigerent-AC/Off. I tried to recharge the system but the Compressor won't engage, How do I get the Compressor to come on so as I can recharge the system. Is it a pressure swithch...

in order to recharge the ac you first must clear the trouble code for the ac off warning. when you get this warning the computer shuts down the compressor to keep it from running without the lubricant that is in the freon. clear the trouble code and the compressor will run and you can recharge the ac.

2002 pontiac grand prix gt AC only blows hot air compressor full of freon and clutch spinning good temp control actuators working corectly narrow ac tube at firewall very cold thicker ac tube at firewall...

i had same problem 2 years ago. the actuator door tube was snapped in half and i used acquarium tubing to splice together. The tube runs along the passenger front well well inside engine and meets under the battery carriage. I could not tell anything was wrong without removing the battery to get a closer look. works like a champ now.

Also: there is also an inline venturi filter that fits in the aluminum tubing on the compressor, it may be clogged. You will have to have the freon sucked out to replace the filter. Check back with me so I can help more if this doesnt solve your problem.

Our ac is not giving any cooling effect even after a long running time kindly suggest samsung AST18WJWDB

You need to make sure that the unit is clean and all filters are clean. This includes the indoor coil and the outdoor coil. After cleaning, and still not cooling properly, check that the compressor is coming on. If not, check that the compressor is being told to come on by the thermostat by checking the voltage. If not, then its the control board to the unit. If so then check the leads on the compressor by doing an ohms test on each individual lead and a ground source. Ohms should read infinite. Then test between each lead. If you get a reading less than infinite, then the compressor is bad.

2 problems.. AC Comp cuts out. And Fan will not stop.

Unit#2 -Sounds like the contacts on the master switch are welded closed or the switch is broken, Replacing the switch should fix this unit.
#1 is a little more difficult to diagnose. The compressor is being taken off line by a circuit that protects the compressor from damage either; 1- liquid refrigerant getting back to the compressor which can be caused by something as simple as a clogged return air filter or evaporator coil on a heat pump or 2- overload situation caused by a bad condenser motor or a clogged condenser coil. The first thing you need to do is clean both coils and replace the filter,. Then check to be sure your getting good airflow across both coils. I think it's most likely an airflow issue I hope this resolves the problem GL!
