Ready light comes on, there is even a little click when the flash button is pressed, but no flash

  • jgelders Aug 02, 2009

Fresh batteries on both flash and my Nikon D50. No corrosion. STill no flash, but it sounds like its trying to discharge still (the little click still happens)

If it is a hardware issue with the SB 600 (e.g. flash tube out) is it worthwhile to send it in for repair?

    Very helpful and analytical.

    Thanks.

A low battery on the camera or in the flash unit can stop it from getting a full charge, and the flash will fail. Please check all batteries. Any battery leakage may also cause the contact to fail.

After checking the batteries, and if that doesn't fix it, try adjusting the flash with your hand while taking a picture with the flash. See if it works if you press the flash unit down on to the contact points with your hand while taking the photo. The flash may not be getting a tight fit onto the contacts. If pressing it down while taking a photo helps, you may be able to fix the problem by carefully bending the contacts so they fit tightly.

Finally, check for any corrosion on all contact points and have them scraped off then test again.

Let me know how you get on. Please let me know the model of the camera.

    Thanks

    Thank you for your reply.

It could be a fault with the contacts on the camera or the flash, or the flash itself may not be working. I would have to advise testing the flash on another camera if possible, or testing another flash on the D50, or you may need to have the camera serviced.

It does sounds like a hardware fault to me somewhere. The tests above should help identify the cause of the problem.

    Best regards

MY SB 600 wont fire. I replaced the battery already but If I test fire it, it wont flash.

If you tried multiple batteries that you know are good and the flash will not fire while on the camera or via the test fire button, this unit will have to be returned to Nikon for service and repair.

With new batteries in the flash, and it being off camera what happens when you press the test button. If still it does not flash call Nikon 1-800-645-6689

I dropped my camera now the flash is broken,

Sure. Nikon makes a line of what they call Speedlights. The SB-400, SB-600, SB-800, and SB-900 will give you full capabilities. Older models will give you somewhat less capabilities.

Third-party vendors also make flash units compatible with the D60.

External flash units tend to be more powerful than built-in flashes, which makes sense considering their size and additional batteries. They also move the light source further from the lens axis, reducing red-eye, improving shadows, etc. They also may allow bounce flash, which further softens the light.

Not flashing when you push the test button strongly indicates that the flash unit needs to be serviced.

Re: nikon 5700 faulty flash

I've had this problem and Nikon repaired it twice for me at about Aus$200 each time.

Recently it happened again.

Quite by accident, I found that I could lift the black on-off main switch and that it comes off the camera body quite easily together with the chrome shutter button.

Inside was a little plastic tab with contact points.

Merely blowing off the dust inside and then replacing the shutter button and on-off black ring appear to have solved the problem for me.

However, my viewfinder and lcd were working normally and not black as  lsvettek said.

I did have a problem with the viewfinder and lcd on yet another occasion and this was a recognised fault which Nikon repaired free of charge.
